Thinking of buying a new car? Want to learn more about what those fuel economy numbers really mean? The US EPA has recently released its 2011 Fuel Economy Guide for vehicles.

In addition to looking up the gas mileage of virtually any vehicle dating back to 1984, you can get a wealth of information about fuel economy, how the mileage per gallon statistics are calculated, tips to improve your gas mileage and information about new types of vehicles under development.

There’s also a version of the site optimized for easy search on your mobile phone.

And, if you’ve ever been frustrated by the labels appearing on cars, take a look at the proposals for a new version of the fuel economy labels for the 2012 model year. Between now and the end of 2010, you also have the opportunity to comment and provide feedback on the proposed new labels.
