I am a big fan of local food. I live only a few blocks from Volante Farm, and right outside my office door in Union Square, Somerville there is a Saturday farmers’ market, so I have the best of both worlds in terms of fresh local food. But just as much as the food, I have come to  appreciate the non-tangible benefits of a farmers market. ‘The Saturday Union Square market is usually packed with folks from the neighborhood. There are lots of impromptu conversations going on about politics, community events, and just the weather. People meet their friends there and are introduced to their friends’ friends, deepening the interpersonal connections within the neighborhood.

The market reminds me of a country fair because each week a different local band plays right in the middle of it. There are simple games for young children, and non-profit organizations have tables with information about their activities. Sometimes they put on demonstrations about container gardening, canning, or cooking. It is a lively, friendly place that draws people of all ages.

Another benefit of the market is that it gets people out of their cars. Most people get there by walking or biking, and leave dragging a shopping cart or carrying a reusable bag or backpack. This makes for healthier people, cleaner air, and safer streets.

Needham is not as urban as Somerville, but many of those benefits could be acheived here. By taking care to appeal to residents of all ages, having a variety of wholesome delicious products for sale, and encouraging people to linger, a farmers market can become a great place for building community.
