Realtor groups in Needham have enthusiastically responded to Green Needham’s challenge to reduce their home energy use. A total of 66 individuals from Condon Realty, Coldwell Banker, Century 21 and Prudential Advantage have completed Green Needham’s 10% Energy Challenge.

One realtor offered the following testimonial: For years I’ve always made it a point to recycle and not be wasteful and I thought I was doing my part. However, the 10% Challenge really opened my eyes to new ways I could conserve. Who would have thought that turning down your thermostat in the winter could have such a huge impact on your carbon footprint? I never would have guessed that even eating a few vegetarian meals a week could do so much to help the environment. The 10% Challenge has really helped me to realize new ways in which I can do my part to keep our town and our planet a great place to live.

So far, 625 households have taken the 10% Energy Challenge, pledging to implement energy-saving actions that would keep over 5 million pounds of CO2 out of the atmosphere each year.

Green Needham’s ambitious goal is to get 1000 households to take the 10% Energy Challenge in honor of Needham’s Tercentennial Celebration. Michael Greis, chair of Green Needham, noted that, Reducing energy use is a great way to honor our tercentennial because it makes a tangible contribution to ensuring that we’ll thrive for the next hundred years.” If you have not yet taken the 10% Energy Challenge, click here http://challenge.greenneedham.org/.

At the end of the year, a brass plaque will be commissioned to honor the groups which have gotten more than 30% of their members or employees to take the Energy Challenge. In addition, businesses can be listed on the plaque if they reduce their energy use by at least 10%.
