Hopkinton, Newton and Brookline are nearby Green Communities among 25 Massachusetts cities and towns that will receive electric vehicle charging stations under a grant program announced last November.

This program will benefit early adopters of electric vehicles, including mass-market cars like the new Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf. The Commonwealth and towns involved in the pilot will gain valuable experience in preparing for the wider adoption of electric-powered vehicles.

Over time, increased adoption will be a significant factor in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector (27% of total US greenhouse gas emissions) and reducing our dependence of foreign sources of petroleum (imports account for 49% of all US petroleum consumption).
