The ranks of Massachusetts Green Communities continues to grow. In July, 2011, 21 more communities were designated Massachusetts Green Communities after meeting the qualifications for the program. These communities will now be eligible to apply for an initial cash grant to support sustainability projects in their community.

As of June, 2011, 95 communities have adopted the Stretch Energy Code (see the latest map of stretch code communities). Adopting the Stretch Energy Code is one of the requirements for becoming a Green Community. Since the Code must be adopted by the community’s legislative branch(Town Meeting or City Council), it is typically the last step in the process and is a good indicator of intention to join the Green Communities program.
