SUMMARY:Needham High School Civics Showcase - featuring climate change and environmental issues
DESCRIPTION:The League of Women Voters of Needham and the Needham High School Social Studies Department are co-sponsoring Students Advocate for Change\, the inaugural Needham High School Civics Showcase\, on Saturday\, June 11 at 2-4 PM at Powers Hall\, Needham Town Hall. \nThe new civics education law requires all high school students to select a state or local issue and prepare an advocacy plan. At the Showcase\, eleventh grade students will share their research\, materials\, and positions in a science fair type setting. \nNeedham High School students (and teachers) have been involved with Green Needham since our earliest days. Green Needham has supported their work\, and students and student organizations have been catalysts and contributors on past and current projects.  The impacts of climate change are no longer in the future – we are experiencing them here and now.  So it is no surprise that the largest number of projects at the showcase address climate change and the environment: \n  \n\nA tree-planting project in Needham\, specifically graduation trees that students plant from the time they are in their first year of elementary school\nAdding solar panels to schools in Needham\nElectrify the Commonwealth’s vehicle fleet\nGovernment action for conversation and protection of the environment\, as well as limiting pollution.\nHelp to reduce pollution\nImproved conservation of energy and advocating for increased energy efficiency.\nMake Massachusetts more sustainable.\nPromoting that all new construction should accommodate solar energy\nReducing pesticides\nTo pass the 100% Clean Energy Act to improve our economy and consumption in our community.\nWe are advocating for the Massachusetts 100% renewable energy by 2035 bill\, aka Bill H.3288.\n\nPlease join them – and us – at Powers Hall on Saturday June 11th to learn about our students’ civic engagement.

SUMMARY:The Next Ten Years -- What Bold Climate Action Means for Us
DESCRIPTION:Heeding the dire warnings of climate scientists\, the Massachusetts legislature recently set ambitious goals for a 50% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030\, on the way to reaching net zero emissions by 2050.  Why are the next ten years so important? On Tuesday\, May 4 at 7:30 pm. First Parish in Needham\, with Green Needham as cosponsor\, will host a Zoom presentation on The Next Ten Years: What Bold Climate Action Means for Us. How will the new Massachusetts Climate Roadmap bill help make an environmentally just transition away from fossil fuels? What might this unprecedented pace of change mean for our everyday lives\, and how can we help? Find the Zoom link here.\n

SUMMARY:Tag Gas Leaks with Needham's New Mothers Out Front Chapter
DESCRIPTION:Are you concerned about gas leaks in Needham? The newly formed Needham chapter of Mothers Out Front is organizing a Tag Gas Leaks event in Needham on Saturday\, May 11 at 1:30 p.m. – 5 p.m.  Participants will meet at the Town Center. RSVP here. \n\nMothers Out Front points out that Needham has 61 sites\, in and around our homes and businesses\, where natural gas is leaking through the ground into our air. These leaks emit methane\, a powerful greenhouse gas\, 86 times worse for the environment than CO2 in its first 20 years in the atmosphere. Gas leaks can cause explosions\, pollute our air\, kill trees\, harm our health\, AND residents are paying for the lost gas. \nTeams of volunteers will get fact sheets\, maps and tags to place near gas leak sites. You’ll have fun and learn more about Mothers Out Front’s campaign to advocate for a livable future for our children. \n

SUMMARY:Renewable Portfolio Standard Hearing
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday September 19th\, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. the Joint Committee on Telecommunications\, Utilities and Energy (TUE) will hold a hearing at the Massachusetts State House on bills related to the Renewable Portfolio Standard. \nOn that day residents from all over Massachusetts will converge on Beacon Hill to fight to increase the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS). A new report  finds that increasing the Massachusetts RPS by 3 percent per year will allow the state to fully realize the benefits of new clean energy demand and lower wholesale electricity prices. This policy would enhance the economic vitality\, competitiveness\, and growth of our state. \nMass Power Forward\, a state-wide coalition of environmental and community groups\, businesses\, faith groups\, and energy advocates\, is supporting the 3% yearly increase. \nGreen Needham has joined 21 other organizations in supporting an increase. \nMore information about the hearing\n \n\n\nRead more about the Mass Renewable Portfolio Standard\, and why increasing it is important.\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Earth Hour - Saturday March 25th at 8:30pm
DESCRIPTION:Earth Hour is WWF’s global environmental movement. Born in Sydney in 2007\, Earth Hour has grown to become the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment\, inspiring individuals\, communities\, businesses and organizations in more than 170 countries and territories to take tangible climate action for over a decade. The movement recognizes the role of individuals in changing climate change and harnesses the collective power of its millions of supporters to shine a light on climate action. \n \nOn Saturday March 25th at 8:30pm\, millions of people across the world are switching off lights for one hour to celebrate their commitment to the planet. \nEarth Hour is a simple idea that turned into a global phenomenon\, with hundreds of millions of people coming together to display a commitment to protect the one thing that unites us all – our planet. \nEarth Hour starts with a simple flick of the lights at 8:30 pm on March 25\, 2017 in a collective display of commitment to create a better future for the planet. But Earth Hour is more than just this hour. Uniting behind a common purpose demonstrates that we can make a meaningful difference. Earth Hour is our chance to make our commitment to protecting our planet not just for one hour a year\, but every day.   It is not  too late to be a part of something big.

SUMMARY:The Free Market: Climate Change Friend or Foe
DESCRIPTION:A discussion with Gary Rucinski\, MA State Coordinator for Citizens’ Climate Lobby. \nAmericans have a love-hate relationship with the free market. We love it for providing\ndesirable goods at low cost\, but blame it for greenhouse gas pollution that drives climate\nchange. Drawing on examples of free market successes and failures\, Gary Rucinski\nexplores what free markets can do to address climate change\, and what government can\ndo to incentivize investors & entrepreneurs to provide the lowest cost clean energy.
