SUMMARY:Earth Hour - Saturday March 25th at 8:30pm
DESCRIPTION:Earth Hour is WWF’s global environmental movement. Born in Sydney in 2007\, Earth Hour has grown to become the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment\, inspiring individuals\, communities\, businesses and organizations in more than 170 countries and territories to take tangible climate action for over a decade. The movement recognizes the role of individuals in changing climate change and harnesses the collective power of its millions of supporters to shine a light on climate action. \n \nOn Saturday March 25th at 8:30pm\, millions of people across the world are switching off lights for one hour to celebrate their commitment to the planet. \nEarth Hour is a simple idea that turned into a global phenomenon\, with hundreds of millions of people coming together to display a commitment to protect the one thing that unites us all – our planet. \nEarth Hour starts with a simple flick of the lights at 8:30 pm on March 25\, 2017 in a collective display of commitment to create a better future for the planet. But Earth Hour is more than just this hour. Uniting behind a common purpose demonstrates that we can make a meaningful difference. Earth Hour is our chance to make our commitment to protecting our planet not just for one hour a year\, but every day.   It is not  too late to be a part of something big.

SUMMARY:The Free Market: Climate Change Friend or Foe
DESCRIPTION:A discussion with Gary Rucinski\, MA State Coordinator for Citizens’ Climate Lobby. \nAmericans have a love-hate relationship with the free market. We love it for providing\ndesirable goods at low cost\, but blame it for greenhouse gas pollution that drives climate\nchange. Drawing on examples of free market successes and failures\, Gary Rucinski\nexplores what free markets can do to address climate change\, and what government can\ndo to incentivize investors & entrepreneurs to provide the lowest cost clean energy.

SUMMARY:75-minute documentary about food waste\, "Just Eat It"
DESCRIPTION:A free showing of “Just Eat It\,” the award-winning film about food waste\, will take place at 4 p.m. on Sunday\, April 10 at First Parish in Needham\, Unitarian Universalist\, 23 Dedham Ave. The 75-minute documentary was inspired by the book America’s Wasteland\, by Wellesley High graduate Jonathan Bloom. The movie has been called “equal parts education and delicious entertainment” and reflects the increasing concern that as much as 40% of the food grown in the U.S. is never eaten\, even though millions of people in our country are food insecure. After the film\, find out about local efforts to reduce waste and join us for light refreshments and discussion in Parish Hall. The event is cosponsored by Green Needham Collaborative and First Parish’s Green Congregation Committee. \nFrom the film producers: “We all love food. As a society\, we devour countless cooking shows\, culinary magazines and foodie blogs. So how could we possibly be throwing nearly 50% of it in the trash? \nFilmmakers and food lovers Jen and Grant dive into the issue of food waste from farm\, through retail\, all the way to the back of their own fridge. After catching a glimpse of the billions of dollars of good food that is tossed each year in North America\, they pledge to quit grocery shopping cold turkey and survive only on foods that has been discarded. \nIn a nation where one in ten people is food insecure\, the images they capture of squandered groceries are both shocking and strangely compelling. But as Grant’s addictive personality turns full tilt towards food rescue\, the ‘thrill of the find’ has unexpected consequences.”

SUMMARY:Sustainable Wellesley Program: Global Warming-What can You Do?
DESCRIPTION:Quentin Prideaux is a Partner in the management consulting firm Alder Associates and lives in Wellesley with his wife\, Delissa\, and two children; Alex (16) and Samantha (11).  He began learning about climate change in the 1990’s\, is the President of Sustainable Wellesley and a Board member of the Wellesley Cancer Prevention Project. The talks that Quentin gives cover the impacts and causes of climate change\, the actions we need to take\, and what it all means for Massachusetts and the Northeast. He will discuss why some have been confused about the science and\, although the subject is serious\, Quentin keeps it positive and lighthearted where possible.  Ideally a talk will lead into a question and answer session and/or a workshop where participants can discuss specific actions they will take – according to the wishes of the organizers. Quentin has a degree in Physics from Bristol University\, but as that was years ago he can promise to keep his talks non-technical. \nClick here for more information.

SUMMARY:Too Good to Waste: Creative Solutions to Reducing Food Waste
DESCRIPTION:It’s shocking to realize that 40% of the food in America is wasted – culled as imperfect and unsalable by producers\, discarded by grocery stores\, uneaten at restaurants and cafeterias\, and thrown away in people’s homes.  At the same time\, over 49 million people in America do not know where their next meal is coming from.  What can be done to address these two issues?  Green Needham and the League of Women Voters of Needham are co-sponsoring a forum on Thursday\, October 22 beginning at 7:30 pm at the Needham Library Community Room to discuss this issue. \nWe will present the problem and hear about what Massachusetts and the town of Needham are doing to find solutions.  You will also come away with tips for what you can do as a consumer and an eater.\n\nPlease join us.

SUMMARY:Green Decade Newton: “The Power of One Voice” Film Showing
DESCRIPTION:Please join Green Decade Newton for our Wednesday\, April 22 at 7pm Earth Day Program – “The Power of One Voice” film & discussion. This new film examines the life of Rachel Carson and the profound impact of her book\, Silent Spring. Carson\, one of the most influential people of the 20th century\, taught that our health depends on the quality of our environment. She alerted us to the damage caused by the unbridled use of pesticides such as DDT\, urging caution. She catalyzed the environmental movement\, leading to the creation of US EPA and passage of the Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act. The film includes Carson’s son\, her biographer\, and scientists who describe her courage in the face of adversity and the chemical industry campaign to discredit her. Ellie Goldberg\, Founder Healthy-Kids. info\, a consulting service that promotes health security and educational equity for students with chronic health conditions\, will lead a Q & A after the film. \nLocation: Drucker Auditorium\, Newton Free Library.
