SUMMARY:Needham Community Education: Judging the Environmental Impact of Products
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin Linder\, Professor of Design and Mechanical Engineering \nWe make decisions every day that have environmental consequences without knowing their real impacts. This workshop introduces participants to impact assessment including life cycle thinking through the use of hands-on case studies. Participants will gain experience with this way of thinking and an ability to judge the environmental aspects of products and associated claims. \n

SUMMARY:Too Good to Waste: Creative Solutions to Reducing Food Waste
DESCRIPTION:It’s shocking to realize that 40% of the food in America is wasted – culled as imperfect and unsalable by producers\, discarded by grocery stores\, uneaten at restaurants and cafeterias\, and thrown away in people’s homes.  At the same time\, over 49 million people in America do not know where their next meal is coming from.  What can be done to address these two issues?  Green Needham and the League of Women Voters of Needham are co-sponsoring a forum on Thursday\, October 22 beginning at 7:30 pm at the Needham Library Community Room to discuss this issue. \nWe will present the problem and hear about what Massachusetts and the town of Needham are doing to find solutions.  You will also come away with tips for what you can do as a consumer and an eater.\n\nPlease join us.

SUMMARY:Green Decade Newton: “The Power of One Voice” Film Showing
DESCRIPTION:Please join Green Decade Newton for our Wednesday\, April 22 at 7pm Earth Day Program – “The Power of One Voice” film & discussion. This new film examines the life of Rachel Carson and the profound impact of her book\, Silent Spring. Carson\, one of the most influential people of the 20th century\, taught that our health depends on the quality of our environment. She alerted us to the damage caused by the unbridled use of pesticides such as DDT\, urging caution. She catalyzed the environmental movement\, leading to the creation of US EPA and passage of the Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act. The film includes Carson’s son\, her biographer\, and scientists who describe her courage in the face of adversity and the chemical industry campaign to discredit her. Ellie Goldberg\, Founder Healthy-Kids. info\, a consulting service that promotes health security and educational equity for students with chronic health conditions\, will lead a Q & A after the film. \nLocation: Drucker Auditorium\, Newton Free Library.

SUMMARY:The People's Climate March in New York
DESCRIPTION:The People’s Climate March will bring tens of thousands of people to New York to show their support for immediate action on Climate Change. \nWorld leaders will be gathered in NYC for a landmark U.N. climate meeting\, presenting us with a great opportunity to apply public pressure and urge action.  UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is urging governments to support an ambitious global agreement to dramatically reduce global warming pollution.  Climate change activist and environmental evangelist Bill McKibben makes a great case in Rolling Stone\, arguing that because there is so much complacency regarding the inevitability of climate change\, we need to “grab the zeitgeist by the scruff of the neck and shake it a little.” \nMany chartered buses taking people to the People’s Climate March are already sold out\, but new buses may be added. 350MA has filled 21 buses and has set up a waiting list. You can sign up here.  PeoplesClimate.org also has an up-to-date list of transit options. They predict that more and more seats will be up for grabs as the event approaches\, so keep checking. At this time there is room on the bus leaving from South Station.

SUMMARY:Economic Growth: Problem or Panacea
DESCRIPTION:Have we outgrown the planet? Is there an alternative to perpetual economic and population growth?  A free showing of the film “Growthbusters: Hooked on Growth” will take place at First Parish in Needham\, 23 Dedham Ave.\, on Sunday\, November 17 at 7 p.m. This thought-provoking documentary challenges our beliefs linking growth with prosperity and fulfillment. Weaving in interviews with leading thinkers\, animation and humorous skits\, the filmmaker documents his efforts to challenge the growth addiction of his own hometown.  Also featured are groups and individuals offering alternatives that they believe would move the world toward true sustainability.  Mike Hanauer\, the Director of GrowthBusters.org\, will lead the post-film discussion.

SUMMARY:EPA Public Listening Session on Reducing Carbon Pollution from Existing Power Plants
DESCRIPTION:On November 4th\, the Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public listening session in Boston to solicit ideas and input from the public and stakeholders about the best Clean Air Act approaches to reducing carbon pollution from existing power plants. This is one of eleven sessions being held around the country. \nThis is the next step in the President’s Climate Action plan following the recent issuance of carbon pollution standards for new power plants on October 10th. \nThe Clean Air Act gives both EPA and states a role in reducing air pollution from power plants that are already in operation. The law directs EPA to establish guidelines\, which states use to design their own programs to reduce emissions. Before proposing guidelines\, EPA must consider how power plants with a variety of different configurations would be able to reduce carbon pollution in a cost-effective way. \nThe feedback from these 11 public listening sessions will play an important role in helping EPA develop smart\, cost-effective guidelines that reflect the latest and best information available. The agency will seek additional public input during the notice and comment period once it issues a proposal\, by June 2014. \n\nRegistration for the Boston listening session\n\nEPA Contact: Dan Abrams – (617) 918-1067

Christina Halfpenny\, Director of Energy Efficiency at the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources\, will be the featured speaker. The high point of Mass Energy’s annual meetings is always the recognition of people and organizations who are leading the way to a new energy future in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and New England. This year’s awardees are: \n\nSolarize Massachusetts – The innovative Solarize Mass. program\, brainchild of a partnership between Mass. DOER and Mass. Clean Energy Center\, has made solar more accessible for residents across the state through targeted community-based outreach.\nRepresentative Lori Ehrlich – As state Representative for the Massachusetts 8th Essex District\, Lori has worked tirelessly on efforts to shut down coal generation\, fix gas leaks\, and promote renewable energy in MA.\nConservation Law Foundation – Since 1966\, CLF’s mission has been to advocate on behalf of the region’s environment and its communities. CLF has recently focused on natural gas leaks and their threat to our climate and health.\nHealth Care Without Harm – Together with its partners\, Health Care Without Harm shares a vision of a health care system that promotes the health of people and the environment.
