DESCRIPTION:Author\, educator and environmentalist Bill McKibben will be speaking in Weston on March 25th as the featured speaker at the annual Harnish Lecture.  Bill’s topic will be a report from the front lines of the climate fight – “A few jailhouse notes on what we still can do”. \n \nThe Harnish lecture is presented by the Environmental Action Group of The Congregational Church of Weston\, UCC.  The lecture will be held at Weston High School\, 444 Wellesley St. in Weston at 3:00 pm. \nBill McKibben is the author of a dozen books about the environment\, beginning with The End of Nature in 1989\, which is regarded as the first book for a general audience on climate change. He is a founder of the grassroots climate campaign 350.org\, which has coordinated 15\,000 rallies in 189 countries since 2009.  \n\nTime Magazine called him ‘the planet’s best green journalist’ and the Boston Globe said in 2010 that he was ‘probably the country’s most important environmentalist.’\nSchumann Distinguished Scholar at Middlebury College\, he holds honorary degrees from a dozen colleges\, including the Universities of Massachusetts and Maine\, the State University of New York\, and Whittier and Colgate Colleges.\nIn 2011 he was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.\nBill grew up in Lexington\, Massachusetts and now resides in Vermont

SUMMARY:Needham hosts February MCAN Steering Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Green Needham is hosting the February Massachusetts Climate Action Network Steering Committee Meeting at the Needham Public Library. The topic of discussion at the February 23rd meeting (7:00 – 8:45 pm) will be Community Scale Wind Energy Projects under attack: Strategies for dealing with Massachusetts Wind Wise and other wind opponents. \nOver the last few years proponents of community scale wind projects have come under attack by well financed and sophisticated opponents to wind energy. The MCAN communities of Duxbury\, Salem\, Greenfield\, Lenox and Falmouth have already experienced this backlash against wind energy and the Patrick Administration’s goal for 2\,000 megawatts of wind generation capacity in Massachusetts by 2020. The program will include discussion from chapter representatives about the issues raised by opponents\, techniques used and the effect of these activities on community leaders In addition Rob Garrity will present an update on the status of the Massachusetts Wind Siting Bill and Fred Schlicher will provide a briefing sheet inventorying major claims made wind opponents along with possible rebuttals to these claims. Other chapter representatives in attendance are encouraged to participate in the discussion and share their chapter’s experiences. \nPanel Includes: \n\nPaul Marquis\, Salem SAFE\nJim Savicki\, Susan Fontaine and Janis Owen of Sustainable Duxbury\nMeghan Amsler\, of Falmouth Wind Project and Cape & Islands Self-Reliance Corp.\nMalcolm Brown\, Hull Wind\nMarilyn Levenson\, Marc Wolman of MassDEP on recent Panel Report on Potential Health Effects of Wind Turbines\n\nThe Massachusetts Climate Action Network is a coalition of over 40 community-based organizations in Massachusetts working on climate and sustainability issues (Green Needham is an MCAN member).
