SUMMARY:Bright Ideas: A Workshop on Smart Outdoor Lighting
DESCRIPTION:The Wellesley Natural Resources Commission has long been concerned about the effects of artificial light on our natural environment. Research has shown that artificial light can create light pollution that affects human health\, and has adverse consequences for trees and plants\, birds\, turtles\, bats\, and even fireflies. To help inform residents about the importance of outdoor lighting\, this month we are hosting a workshop with lighting expert Bob Parks of Smart Outdoor Lighting Alliance. \nThis free workshop will take place at the Wellesley Free Library on Tuesday\, September 26\, 2017\, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and will include an outdoor demonstration of LED lighting options. \n  \n  \nOur “Bright Ideas” workshop will help you: \nEvaluate different types of lighting\nChoose the correct lighting for your property\nMake sure your lights improve safety\nChoose environmentally friendly lights\nTalk to your neighbors about lighting\, and more!

SUMMARY:Sustainable Wellesley Program: Global Warming-What can You Do?
DESCRIPTION:Quentin Prideaux is a Partner in the management consulting firm Alder Associates and lives in Wellesley with his wife\, Delissa\, and two children; Alex (16) and Samantha (11).  He began learning about climate change in the 1990’s\, is the President of Sustainable Wellesley and a Board member of the Wellesley Cancer Prevention Project. The talks that Quentin gives cover the impacts and causes of climate change\, the actions we need to take\, and what it all means for Massachusetts and the Northeast. He will discuss why some have been confused about the science and\, although the subject is serious\, Quentin keeps it positive and lighthearted where possible.  Ideally a talk will lead into a question and answer session and/or a workshop where participants can discuss specific actions they will take – according to the wishes of the organizers. Quentin has a degree in Physics from Bristol University\, but as that was years ago he can promise to keep his talks non-technical. \nClick here for more information.

SUMMARY:Weatherization Seminar - Preventing ice damming
DESCRIPTION:As Needham residents remember from last winter\, ice damming was an all too familiar sight\, easily identified by the long icicles hanging precariously off the edges of roofs. Beyond the obvious danger of falling ice hitting people and property\, ice damming could be creating significant long-term damage to your home and health. Winter may be slow in coming this year\, but that makes it an even better time to get ready! \nOn Monday\, January 23rd please join us at 7:30 pm at the Needham Historical Society for a one-hour seminar on ice damming. Travis Estes\, a home energy advisor from Next Step Living\, will discuss the consequences of ice damming and how to prevent it by utilizing Mass Save incentives and rebates to properly weatherize your home. \nThis is the first in a series of weatherization seminars to be presented this winter by Green Needham in partnership with Next Step Living.

SUMMARY:NESEA Green Buildings Open House
DESCRIPTION:If you missed this summer’s Green Energy Tour of Needham homes – or if you participated and want to see more – take advantage of the NESEA Green Buildings Open House on October 1st. \nLast year\, over 10\,000 people visited 500 sites from Maine to Pennsylvania and learned about the sustainable features incorporated in those facilities. Ken Farbstein’s solar PV installation\, one of the sites on Needham’s Green Energy Tour\, will again be open for viewing during the Open House. \nThe Green Buildings Open House is sponsored by NESEA\, the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association\, a regional membership organization promoting sustainable energy solutions in the built environment. It will take place on Saturday\, October 1st between 10 am and 4 pm. \nFor more information about the event\, including a searchable map and list of buildings on the tour\, click here to go to the NESEA’s event web site. SUMMARY:Green Energy Tour of Needham Homes
DESCRIPTION:Information on each of the homes in the Green Energy Tour is available here. \nYou don’t have to travel far to see examples of homes with the newest clean energy technology. On Saturday\, June 11\, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.\, the League of Women Voters of Needham will host a green energy open house event. Six Needham homes will be showcased\, with features that include solar electricity\, solar hot water\, co-generation of electricity and heat\, radiant floor heating\, older home weatherization retrofit\, and sustainable yard. Also featured will be the first Needham home to install geothermal heating and cooling. \n“Needham residents may not even realize that their neighbors have innovative systems to produce energy\,” said Susan McGarvey\, one of the event organizers. “We’d like people to know about federal and state incentives that make green energy more affordable. We’ll also include tips about energy efficiency\, since that is a way every household can reduce their energy use.” \nParticipants should come to the Webster Street entrance of the high school before 12:30 p.m. to pick up maps or buy tickets. They can decide which homes they would like to visit. At each site\, homeowners and possibly installers will be on hand to answer questions and explain their systems. \nAdvance tickets are available for $5.99 from www.BrownPaperTickets.com (search “Needham”) or for $7.00 at the door on the day of the event. Children 18 and under are free.  Tickets are also available from League members. \nFor more information call Susan McGarvey at 781 444-5286 or visit www.lwv-needham.org
