SUMMARY:Needham High School Civics Showcase - featuring climate change and environmental issues
DESCRIPTION:The League of Women Voters of Needham and the Needham High School Social Studies Department are co-sponsoring Students Advocate for Change\, the inaugural Needham High School Civics Showcase\, on Saturday\, June 11 at 2-4 PM at Powers Hall\, Needham Town Hall. \nThe new civics education law requires all high school students to select a state or local issue and prepare an advocacy plan. At the Showcase\, eleventh grade students will share their research\, materials\, and positions in a science fair type setting. \nNeedham High School students (and teachers) have been involved with Green Needham since our earliest days. Green Needham has supported their work\, and students and student organizations have been catalysts and contributors on past and current projects.  The impacts of climate change are no longer in the future – we are experiencing them here and now.  So it is no surprise that the largest number of projects at the showcase address climate change and the environment: \n  \n\nA tree-planting project in Needham\, specifically graduation trees that students plant from the time they are in their first year of elementary school\nAdding solar panels to schools in Needham\nElectrify the Commonwealth’s vehicle fleet\nGovernment action for conversation and protection of the environment\, as well as limiting pollution.\nHelp to reduce pollution\nImproved conservation of energy and advocating for increased energy efficiency.\nMake Massachusetts more sustainable.\nPromoting that all new construction should accommodate solar energy\nReducing pesticides\nTo pass the 100% Clean Energy Act to improve our economy and consumption in our community.\nWe are advocating for the Massachusetts 100% renewable energy by 2035 bill\, aka Bill H.3288.\n\nPlease join them – and us – at Powers Hall on Saturday June 11th to learn about our students’ civic engagement.

SUMMARY:Climate and Energy Legislation Program
DESCRIPTION:Learn About Pending Massachusetts Environmental and Energy Legislation and How to Engage with Legislators \nA full slate of environmental and energy legislation has been filed on Beacon Hill. There is a sense of urgency among legislators to take stronger action to meet Massachusetts’ climate change and clean energy economy goals. Leaders in both the Senate and House have stepped up. At a recent meeting of local elected officials\, we attended\, Senate President Karen Spilka called for “bold and pragmatic action” and said that every policy decision should be evaluated with a climate change lens. House Speaker Bob DeLeo proposed $1 billion in climate resilience funding for municipalities. \nWe the people have an important role to play by being informed and effectively advocating for action.  Join us on Thursday\, April 25th at 7:30 pm to hear from Dan Bosley\, Government Relations Executive for the Northeast Clean Energy Council (NECEC)\, and a former state representative from North Adams. \nWith nearly 25 years of experience in the legislature\, service at the Chair of the Joint Committee on Energy and having co-authored groundbreaking electricity restructuring and life sciences bills\, Dan understands the ins and outs of getting things done on Beacon Hill. He is an engaging speaker with a strong grasp of the issues and a deep understanding of what works when individuals\, businesses and organizations want to effectively engage with their legislators. \nDan will speak about current Massachusetts energy and climate legislation\, the path forward from here\, and how to make your voice heard.

SUMMARY:Too Good to Waste: Creative Solutions to Reducing Food Waste
DESCRIPTION:It’s shocking to realize that 40% of the food in America is wasted – culled as imperfect and unsalable by producers\, discarded by grocery stores\, uneaten at restaurants and cafeterias\, and thrown away in people’s homes.  At the same time\, over 49 million people in America do not know where their next meal is coming from.  What can be done to address these two issues?  Green Needham and the League of Women Voters of Needham are co-sponsoring a forum on Thursday\, October 22 beginning at 7:30 pm at the Needham Library Community Room to discuss this issue. \nWe will present the problem and hear about what Massachusetts and the town of Needham are doing to find solutions.  You will also come away with tips for what you can do as a consumer and an eater.\n\nPlease join us.

SUMMARY:GNC Program: Greening Your Electricity: How you can choose clean energy
DESCRIPTION:Green Needham will explain the options for any electric customer to bring more renewable energy into the grid — even if you’re not a candidate for solar panels. The list of green energy choices is growing — from having a share in a “solar garden” to opting to buy green power. What are the different green energy choices\, how do those options support clean energy\, and how do they affect your electric bill? After a brief presentation\, there will be time to ask questions and to speak with representatives of various green energy offerings. \nThe program will take place the Needham Library at 7 p.m. on Monday\, March 2. \nTake this opportunity to learn more about your options\, and then take action to opt for “green energy” – your choice can make a difference in addressing climate change and reducing greenhouse gases.

SUMMARY:Solar 101 Workshop - Fall 2013
DESCRIPTION:Postponed! — Due to the anticipated 2nd night for November’s Special Town meeting\, to be held on November 6th\, we have to find a new date for this session. \nWe also now know that the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center expects to inform communities whether they have been chosen for the fall 2013 Solarize Massachusetts program before Thanksgiving\, just a few weeks from now. We will select a new date for Solar 101 once we know whether we have been selected for the Solarize program. \n\nHave you wondered if solar is right for your house? If so\, join us as Green Needham once again offers our well-received Solar 101\, an introduction and guide to residential solar energy for homeowners\, as part of our ongoing “Living Green in Needham” series. \nWe will explain the technology and terminology of solar PV (photovoltaic) and solar thermal systems\, the criteria homeowners should consider before proceeding\, and acquisition and financing options (lease versus purchase). \nAs with our initial Solar 101 held in March\, we will invite Needham’s Building Commissioner\, David Roche\, to review what the Building Department will look for from the homeowner and the installer to ensure a safe and timely installation. \nWe will also cover the questions that homeowners should ask of installers\, and tips from Needham residents who have been through the process. \nFollowing the presentation\, we expect to have several Needham homeowners and their installers available for questions and consultation. \nPresented in partnership with Needham Community Education\, Solar 101 will take place on Wednesday\, November 6th from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm at Needham High School. \nRegister through Needham Community Education by phone at 781-455-0400 x 235 (8 am – 4 pm). There is a registration fee of $10. \nRefer to the Needham Adult Education Catalog/Fall 2013 (last page) for information on registering by fax\, mail or in person. SUMMARY:Green Needham Meeting: The Water is Rising - Boston's Climate Action Plan
DESCRIPTION:The City of Boston is the economic engine for our region. In 2007\, Mayor Tom Menino recognized both the threats and the opportunities that climate change poses for the City and our region. The City of Boston developed its initial climate action plan that year\, and updated it in 2011. \n \nThe threat is visibly demonstrated in an image showing the large areas of Boston that would have been under 2 – 4 feet of water had Superstorm Sandy hit at high tide. Those are levels expected to occur in Boston by mid-century. \nClimate action will also bring significant economic benefits to Boston. Energy efficiency and behavior change can reduce greenhouse gas emissions from buildings\, transportation\, and solid waste-and produce net savings of over $2 billion by 2020 through lower energy bills. Demand for energy-and climate-related services will create thousands of jobs. And taking the necessary steps to prepare for climate-related change will ensure that Boston’s economic and social infrastructure remains strong. \nJoin us for a Green Needham meeting on May 20th as we welcome Brian Swett\, Chief of Environment and Energy for the City of Boston\, to Needham. \nBrian will take us through Boston’s comprehensive climate action plan\, addressing mitigation\, adaptation\, community engagement and social equity. He’ll talk about how responding to climate change is driving innovation\, economic opportunity and economic growth for Boston and our region. \nThrough this event\, Green Needham hopes to spark conversation and collaboration amongst local metro-west communities as we explore what climate change means to us—and how we can respond in ways that transform climate threats into opportunities for strengthening our local communities.
