SUMMARY:GNC Program: Greening Your Electricity: How you can choose clean energy
DESCRIPTION:Green Needham will explain the options for any electric customer to bring more renewable energy into the grid — even if you’re not a candidate for solar panels. The list of green energy choices is growing — from having a share in a “solar garden” to opting to buy green power. What are the different green energy choices\, how do those options support clean energy\, and how do they affect your electric bill? After a brief presentation\, there will be time to ask questions and to speak with representatives of various green energy offerings. \nThe program will take place the Needham Library at 7 p.m. on Monday\, March 2. \nTake this opportunity to learn more about your options\, and then take action to opt for “green energy” – your choice can make a difference in addressing climate change and reducing greenhouse gases.

SUMMARY:Needham hosts February MCAN Steering Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Green Needham is hosting the February Massachusetts Climate Action Network Steering Committee Meeting at the Needham Public Library. The topic of discussion at the February 23rd meeting (7:00 – 8:45 pm) will be Community Scale Wind Energy Projects under attack: Strategies for dealing with Massachusetts Wind Wise and other wind opponents. \nOver the last few years proponents of community scale wind projects have come under attack by well financed and sophisticated opponents to wind energy. The MCAN communities of Duxbury\, Salem\, Greenfield\, Lenox and Falmouth have already experienced this backlash against wind energy and the Patrick Administration’s goal for 2\,000 megawatts of wind generation capacity in Massachusetts by 2020. The program will include discussion from chapter representatives about the issues raised by opponents\, techniques used and the effect of these activities on community leaders In addition Rob Garrity will present an update on the status of the Massachusetts Wind Siting Bill and Fred Schlicher will provide a briefing sheet inventorying major claims made wind opponents along with possible rebuttals to these claims. Other chapter representatives in attendance are encouraged to participate in the discussion and share their chapter’s experiences. \nPanel Includes: \n\nPaul Marquis\, Salem SAFE\nJim Savicki\, Susan Fontaine and Janis Owen of Sustainable Duxbury\nMeghan Amsler\, of Falmouth Wind Project and Cape & Islands Self-Reliance Corp.\nMalcolm Brown\, Hull Wind\nMarilyn Levenson\, Marc Wolman of MassDEP on recent Panel Report on Potential Health Effects of Wind Turbines\n\nThe Massachusetts Climate Action Network is a coalition of over 40 community-based organizations in Massachusetts working on climate and sustainability issues (Green Needham is an MCAN member). MCAN holds is regular steering committee meetings in member communities around the region to encourage participation and allow chapter members from different communities to meet and to share ideas and experiences. All are invited to participate.

SUMMARY:New England Wind Energy Education Project Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The New England Wind Energy Education Project (NEWEEP) will host a 1-day conference and workshop on June 7th in Marlborough for policymakers\, engaged citizens\, educators\, students\, utility representatives\, and the media to learn more about wind energy and the wind development community. NEWEEP is funded by the US Department of Energy’s Wind Powering America initiative under a 2-year grant. \nThe conference/workshop will focus on presenting balanced information relevant to issues of importance to individuals and communities affected by wind energy proposals throughout New England\, including environmental and economic benefits as well as siting concerns. Our goal is to ensure that participants know where to go to obtain the latest research\, identify areas where more research is needed\, and identify strategies for continuing the NEWEEP effort. \nThis one-day conference/workshop will start with presentations and discussion panels. In addition\, facilitated breakout sessions will allow participants to collectively brainstorm issues associated with wind development\, siting\, and permitting\, and to identify areas where more credible research is needed and how to oversee and fund it. \nNEWEEP’s premise is that wind energy has benefits and that responsibly-sited wind power has a role to play in New England\, but\, not every place is the right place for wind generation. NEWEEP’s mission is to seek and make available the best information possible to support good decisions. \nThe conference/workshop is intended for: \n\n* Policy implementers-including state\, regional and local regulatory/planning authorities\, municipal officials (e.g. selectmen\, planning board\, board of health\, etc.)\, siting and permitting officials and staff\nPolicymakers-including legislators\, politicians and regulators\nEngaged citizens-including those impacted by existing or planned wind power projects\, members of local energy committees. Community organizations either supportive of or concerned about wind energy in their midst\nEducators\, students\, utility representatives\, the press\, and members of the general public interested in learning more about wind energy\nThe wind development community\n\nFurther information about the conference (including registration information when available) is at the NEWEEP web site.
