Then hear from another Wellesley native\, Ashley Stanley\, founder of Lovin’ Spoonfuls\, a non-profit organization that matches excess food with people in need. The event marks an increasing concern locally about food waste. As much as 40% of the food grown in the U.S. is never eaten\, although many people do not have enough to eat. SUMMARY:Sustainable Wellesley Program: Global Warming-What can You Do?
DESCRIPTION:Quentin Prideaux is a Partner in the management consulting firm Alder Associates and lives in Wellesley with his wife\, Delissa\, and two children; Alex (16) and Samantha (11).  He began learning about climate change in the 1990’s\, is the President of Sustainable Wellesley and a Board member of the Wellesley Cancer Prevention Project. The talks that Quentin gives cover the impacts and causes of climate change\, the actions we need to take\, and what it all means for Massachusetts and the Northeast. He will discuss why some have been confused about the science and\, although the subject is serious\, Quentin keeps it positive and lighthearted where possible.  Ideally a talk will lead into a question and answer session and/or a workshop where participants can discuss specific actions they will take – according to the wishes of the organizers. Quentin has a degree in Physics from Bristol University\, but as that was years ago he can promise to keep his talks non-technical. \nClick here for more information.

DESCRIPTION:Help Beautify and Sustain Needham On the Park and Rec’s Clean-Up Day! \n\nOn the morning of Saturday\, April 2\, 2016 you can be part of a town-wide effort to keep Needham clean and beautiful.  That’s the day of the Needham Park and Recreation’s semi-annual Clean-Up Day.  All you have to do is show up at the Public Services Administrative Building\, 500 Dedham Avenue\, between 8:30 and 11 a.m. and pick up your trash bags and instructions\, and you will be assigned a location.  If you have a group\, you are encouraged to call 781-455-7550 or register online at the Park and Rec website.  After picking up trash\, you will be instructed to contact Park and Rec to give notice that you are done\, and where you are leaving the bag.  All bags will be picked up that day by the Town.  It’s fun\, easy\, and a terrific way to get outside with family and friends and keep Needham beautiful.\n  \n\nClick here for more information.

The movie has been called “equal parts education and delicious entertainment” and reflects the increasing concern that as much as 40% of the food grown in the U.S. is never eaten\, even though millions of people in our country are food insecure. After the film\, find out about local efforts to reduce waste and join us for light refreshments and discussion in Parish Hall. The event is cosponsored by Green Needham Collaborative and First Parish’s Green Congregation Committee. \nFrom the film producers: “We all love food. As a society\, we devour countless cooking shows\, culinary magazines and foodie blogs. So how could we possibly be throwing nearly 50% of it in the trash? \nFilmmakers and food lovers Jen and Grant dive into the issue of food waste from farm\, through retail\, all the way to the back of their own fridge. SUMMARY:Reducing Food Waste – a workshop for local restaurants and food service businesses
DESCRIPTION:Restaurants and food service businesses in Needham and neighboring communities are invited to a workshop on Reducing Food Waste on Tuesday\, June 7th at 9:30 am.  This free workshop is designed for the busy food service professional and is presented by Green Needham and RecyclingWorks.\n\nThis free workshop is open to food service businesses in Needham\, Newton\, Wellesley\, and other neighboring communities interested in learning about diverting wasted food from the trash through food donation\, composting\, and other waste diversion strategies.   \nHeather Billings and Josh Cook from RecyclingWorks in MA will discuss: \n\nHow to estimate how much food waste your business is producing and the potential savings from starting a food waste collection program.\nRecommended practices for source separation of food waste\, starting in the kitchen.\nWorking with commercial haulers for collection of food waste.\nGuidelines for proper food waste storage\, from cleanliness to container maintenance.\nActions to reduce food waste.\nHow to partner with a food rescue organization to donate surplus food.\nSuccessful examples of food waste diversion at several businesses and institutions.\nThe Commercial Organics Waste Ban.\nFree technical assistance available to businesses through RecyclingWorks in MA.\n\nGreen Needham is working in cooperation with the Town of Needham and partners in neighboring communities to find sustainable and cost effective ways to keep food waste out of the waste stream and support our local restaurants.  Representatives from Green Needham and the Needham Department of Public Works will discuss current activities and facilitate a conversation with attendees on ideas for further local collaborations to increase food waste diversion.   \nTo help develop opportunities for local collaboration\, Green Needham has developed a brief (5 minute) online survey to collect information about how food waste is currently being handled by local food establishments.  Even if you are not able to attend the workshop\, your participation will help identify the most promising solutions to help your business.
