SUMMARY:Environmentally Friendly Lawn Alternatives
DESCRIPTION:Environmentally Friendly Lawn Alternatives \nAccording to NASA\, in the United States more surface area is covered by lawn than by any other single irrigated crop. He will also offer practical how-to advice on how to create and maintain a yard with native plantings. A question and answer period will follow.\nRefreshments will begin at 9:15 am and the forum will start at 9:30 am. All Friday Forums are free and open to the public.\n\nMore information on the event.\n\n

SUMMARY:Renewable Portfolio Standard Hearing
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday September 19th\, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. the Joint Committee on Telecommunications\, Utilities and Energy (TUE) will hold a hearing at the Massachusetts State House on bills related to the Renewable Portfolio Standard. \nOn that day residents from all over Massachusetts will converge on Beacon Hill to fight to increase the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS). A new report  finds that increasing the Massachusetts RPS by 3 percent per year will allow the state to fully realize the benefits of new clean energy demand and lower wholesale electricity prices. This policy would enhance the economic vitality\, competitiveness\, and growth of our state. \nMass Power Forward\, a state-wide coalition of environmental and community groups\, businesses\, faith groups\, and energy advocates\, is supporting the 3% yearly increase. \nGreen Needham has joined 21 other organizations in supporting an increase. \nMore information about the hearing\n \n\n\nRead more about the Mass Renewable Portfolio Standard\, and why increasing it is important.\n\n\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:After enjoying the long Thanksgiving weekend\, join us at 7:00 pm on Wednesday\, November 29th at the Needham Public Library to hear what’s already happening to reduce\, reuse and recycle waste in Needham. Bring your questions\, ideas\, and your enthusiasm for a conversation about what we can do next to help the environment and save money. \nWe will have a lively discussion\, with a fresh look at ways for the Needham community to see discarded materials as resources\, not something to be burned or buried. Among the topics are: \n\nThe Big Picture – what the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is doing to promote innovative solutions for waste management.\nAll Along the Food Chain – how Olin College is collaborating with both Food for Free to fight food insecurity and with CERO Cooperative and the Needham RTS (Recycling & Transfer Station) to compost food waste.\nBetter Recycling for Needham – how can the Needham Department of Public Works\, the RTS and residents work together to improve the recycling process? Can we make it more environmentally sustainable while reducing costs and generating more revenues?\n‘Next Steps – where we can go from here.\n\nOur panel will include: \n\nGreg Cooper – Director\, Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (and Needham Resident)\nJim Drumheller – General Manager – Olin College Dining Services\nMark Evans – Casella Waste Management (processing Needham’s recycling)\nMichael Greis – Chair\, Green Needham\nLor Holmes – General Manager and Worker-Owner\, CERO Cooperative (an employee-owned composting company)\nGreg Smith – Superintendent\, Needham Recycling and Transfer Station\n\nFor more information\, visit Green Needham’s Toward Zero Waste Initiative \nIf have questions you’d like answered during this discussion or want to stay in touch with this project – please email us at info@greenneedham.org

SUMMARY:Transportation Summit (part 1): Economic Impacts of Self-driving Vehicles & Cycling
DESCRIPTION:As part of its commitment to addressing our region’s transportation needs\, join the Newton Needham Regional Chamber as we take a look at two significant changes to the ways people are — or will be — moving throughout our region. \nWe’ll start with a presentation exploring the economic development benefits of investing in cycling and bike infrastructure; including the need to improve connectivity between bike paths\, transit stations\, commercial centers and cultural attractions. After that\, we’ll take a step forward and explore the fiscal and economic impacts of the transition to self-driving vehicles on Massachusetts\, our municipalities and our households. We’ll explore current revenue sources\, how self-driving cars will impact our municipal budgets and identify policy options to mitigate certain fiscal and economic impacts. \nOur cycling conversation will be led by Richard Fries\, executive director\, of MassBike\, an organization that has been working with MassDOT\, Beacon Hill\, DCR\, the Department of Public Health\, police and planners to improve conditions for bicycle riders in Massachusetts since 1977. Rafael Mares\, an attorney and Vice President at the Conservation Law Foundation\, will lead the presentation about self-driving vehicles. Mares will present the findings of a new CLF report that will provide a fiscal analysis these vehicles will have on the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. \nThe event is free\, but please register.
