DESCRIPTION:Conscious Capitalism CEO Doug Rauch will be the keynote speaker at the Newton-Needham Chamber’s Green Business Awards Breakfast\, on Thursday June 19 in Newton.\n \nThe Green Business Awards Breakfast will be held outdoors\, along the banks of the Charles River\, adjacent to the Newton-Marriott Hotel\, and will also honor local businesses for their environmental achievements. \nA nationally known speaker\, Rauch will discuss his newest business venture\, an innovative non-profit solution to the issue of “food waste” and hunger/obesity by bringing high quality\, nutritious food at affordable prices to the underserved in our inner cities. \nRauch\, a Newton resident\, spent 31 years with Trader Joe’s Company\, including 14 years as president\, helping grow the business from a small\, nine-store chain in Southern California\, to a nationally acclaimed retail success story with more than 340 stores in 30 states. He developed their prized buying philosophy\, created their unique private label food program\, and wrote and executed the business plan for expanding Trader Joe’s nationally. \nHe is presently CEO of Conscious Capitalism Inc.\, a non-profit dedicated to challenging business leaders to rethink why their organizations exist\, and to acknowledge their roles in the interdependent global marketplace. He is also a trustee at Olin College and chairs the Board of Overseers at WBUR. \nChannel 5 news anchor and Newton native Phil Lipof will serve as the master of ceremonies for the breakfast.  Also speaking that morning will be Mass Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner David Cash\, Newton Mayor Setti Warren and Needham Board of Selectman Chair John Bulian. \n“The Green Business Breakfast is a chance to bring together local businesses\, energy and environmental experts and policy makers to discuss the challenges and opportunities related to preserving and protecting our environment\,” said Greg Reibman\, president of the Newton-Needham Chamber. \nThe Chamber’s Environment Committee will recognize seven businesses from Newton and Needham that have taken a leadership role in reducing energy or other environmental strategies or for providing noteworthy green products or services. \n“The Green Business Awards Breakfast brings business and civic leaders together to discuss and celebrate the economic and social benefits of being green\,” said Peter Smith\, chairman of the Chamber’s Environment Committee. “It will recognize the outstanding achievements local businesses and civic organizations have taken to reduce our carbon footprint.” \nGreen Needham is an active participant in the Green Business Awards program. \n  \nAdvance tickets for the Green Business Awards Breakfast\, Thursday June 19 from 7:30-9:30 a.m. at the Newton Marriott Hotel\, are $30 for chamber members and $35 for non-members and are now on sale at the Chamber’s web site or by calling 617-244-5300. DESCRIPTION:The People’s Climate March will bring tens of thousands of people to New York to show their support for immediate action on Climate Change. \nWorld leaders will be gathered in NYC for a landmark U.N. climate meeting\, presenting us with a great opportunity to apply public pressure and urge action.  UN Secretary­ General Ban Ki-moon is urging governments to support an ambitious global agreement to dramatically reduce global warming pollution.  Climate change activist and environmental evangelist Bill McKibben makes a great case in Rolling Stone\, arguing that because there is so much complacency regarding the inevitability of climate change\, we need to “grab the zeitgeist by the scruff of the neck and shake it a little.” \nMany chartered buses taking people to the People’s Climate March are already sold out\, but new buses may be added. 350MA has filled 21 buses and has set up a waiting list. You can sign up here.  PeoplesClimate.org also has an up-to-date list of transit options. They predict that more and more seats will be up for grabs as the event approaches\, so keep checking. At this time there is room on the bus leaving from South Station.

DESCRIPTION:A lecture by Eleanor Talbot\, forecaster for the National Weather Service \n2-3 pm\, Sunday\, January 11\, 2015 (Snow date: 2-3 pm\, Sunday\, January 18\, 2015) \nMs. Talbot will provide a look at the causes of extreme weather events of recent years. Not every disastrous tornado\, hurricane and drought is the result of man-made influences and global warming – but many are. DESCRIPTION:Green Needham will explain the options for any electric customer to bring more renewable energy into the grid — even if you’re not a candidate for solar panels. The list of green energy choices is growing — from having a share in a “solar garden” to opting to buy green power. What are the different green energy choices\, how do those options support clean energy\, and how do they affect your electric bill? After a brief presentation\, there will be time to ask questions and to speak with representatives of various green energy offerings. \nThe program will take place the Needham Library at 7 p.m. on Monday\, March 2. \nTake this opportunity to learn more about your options\, and then take action to opt for “green energy” – your choice can make a difference in addressing climate change and reducing greenhouse gases.

DESCRIPTION:Peter Kane\, Instructor  \nJoin us to learn about the design and construction of a zero net energy home built in Westwood three years ago. The owner/designer/builder will present a slide show illustrating the important design considerations\, construction details\, and the finished home. The presentation will also cover the cost of the construction\, how the home has performed over the three years\, what it is like to live in it\, and what mistakes were made that could be avoided – and answer the question of whether solar energy really works. (Hint: the electric company owes him money!)
