SUMMARY:Needham Adult Education: Stop Mulch-Scaping and Start Landscaping!
DESCRIPTION:Spring Workshop\nJoanne Neale\, Instructor \nAt some unknown point in time\, mulch–black\, orange\, brown\, etc.–became a part of the landscape\, but wouldn’t you rather have plants? Anywhere you can put mulch\, you can  dig a hole and put in a groundcover plant. Groundcover plants = living mulches. Think of the money\, time and work you’ll save on mulching every spring. And groundcovers are the go-to plant for low-maintenance gardens. Besides eliminating the need for mulch\, they keep weeds from crowding in; they provide an extra layer of color and flowers; and  they help maintain soil moisture\, which means less watering.  What’s not to like about that? Come learn what to do before you start replacing your boring old mulch with fabulous new groundcovers and find out which groundcovers are right for your garden. \nLimited to 20.

SUMMARY:WBUR "Business In The Era Of Climate Change" Series: Part 2: Food\, Diet And Climate
DESCRIPTION:A five-part WBUR series in collaboration with Harvard Business School and Boston University Questrom School of Business \nBusiness is the main source of the greenhouse gases that are causing the Earth’s climate to change. From sustainable supply chains to plant-based burgers with the taste and texture of beef and meat-like protein grown in the lab\, new foods are exploding onto restaurant menus and family dinner plates. What challenges are companies facing as they introduce these new foods into the marketplace? How fast can we expect these new foods to catch on? SUMMARY:Climate and Energy Legislation Program
DESCRIPTION:Learn About Pending Massachusetts Environmental and Energy Legislation and How to Engage with Legislators \nA full slate of environmental and energy legislation has been filed on Beacon Hill. There is a sense of urgency among legislators to take stronger action to meet Massachusetts’ climate change and clean energy economy goals. Leaders in both the Senate and House have stepped up. At a recent meeting of local elected officials\, we attended\, Senate President Karen Spilka called for “bold and pragmatic action” and said that every policy decision should be evaluated with a climate change lens. House Speaker Bob DeLeo proposed $1 billion in climate resilience funding for municipalities. \nWe the people have an important role to play by being informed and effectively advocating for action.  Join us on Thursday\, April 25th at 7:30 pm to hear from Dan Bosley\, Government Relations Executive for the Northeast Clean Energy Council (NECEC)\, and a former state representative from North Adams. \nWith nearly 25 years of experience in the legislature\, service at the Chair of the Joint Committee on Energy and having co-authored groundbreaking electricity restructuring and life sciences bills\, Dan understands the ins and outs of getting things done on Beacon Hill. He is an engaging speaker with a strong grasp of the issues and a deep understanding of what works when individuals\, businesses and organizations want to effectively engage with their legislators. \nDan will speak about current Massachusetts energy and climate legislation\, the path forward from here\, and how to make your voice heard.

SUMMARY:Tag Gas Leaks with Needham's New Mothers Out Front Chapter
DESCRIPTION:Are you concerned about gas leaks in Needham? The newly formed Needham chapter of Mothers Out Front is organizing a Tag Gas Leaks event in Needham on Saturday\, May 11 at 1:30 p.m. – 5 p.m.  Participants will meet at the Town Center. RSVP here. \n\nMothers Out Front points out that Needham has 61 sites\, in and around our homes and businesses\, where natural gas is leaking through the ground into our air. These leaks emit methane\, a powerful greenhouse gas\, 86 times worse for the environment than CO2 in its first 20 years in the atmosphere. Gas leaks can cause explosions\, pollute our air\, kill trees\, harm our health\, AND residents are paying for the lost gas. \nTeams of volunteers will get fact sheets\, maps and tags to place near gas leak sites. You’ll have fun and learn more about Mothers Out Front’s campaign to advocate for a livable future for our children. \n

SUMMARY:WBUR "Business In The Era Of Climate Change" Series: Part 5: Energy Transitions
DESCRIPTION:A five-part WBUR series in collaboration with Harvard Business School and Boston University Questrom School of Business \nBusiness is the main source of the greenhouse gases that are causing the Earth’s climate to change. Business is also the main source of new products\, services and business models that may save us from wholesale climate \ncalamity. This 5-part series\, featuring leading thinkers from business\, environmental advocacy groups and area universities\, will explore what businesses are doing\, can do and should do to confront climate change. \nPart 5: Energy Transitions  \nWe cannot confront climate change without wholesale changes in our sources of energy. What companies are leading the transition to fossil-fuel-free energy\, what barriers are they facing\, and how are they tackling those barriers? How are traditional electric utilities shifting their business strategies to accommodate or even promote new\, cleaner sources of energy? And how are new entrants to this old sector distrupting the electricity industry with clean energy innovations? \nPanelists: \n\nPeter Fox-Penner\, Director\, Institute for Sustainable Energy\, and Professor of Practice\, Questrom School of Business\nAbigail Ross Hopper\, President & CEO at Solar Energy Industries Association\nFrancis Slingsby\, Head of Strategic Partnerships\, Orsted\nModerator\, WBUR Environmental Reporter Bruce Gellerman

SUMMARY:Darkness in Distress: A Presentation on Light Pollution
DESCRIPTION:Darkness in Distress: A Presentation on Light Pollution sponsored by Greening Rozzie\, City Counselor Michelle Wu\, and The Boston Food Forest Coalition \nKelly Beatty has graciously offered to speak at that Arnold Arboretum next Tuesday night at 7:00. He’ll be giving a presentation on the Light Pollution focusing specifically on the effect of excessive light on urban safety. \nLight pollution\, simply put\, is any unnecessary or excessive outdoor illumination. Sadly\, it’s become a pervasive and ugly consequence of modern 24/7 society. Light pollution robs us of the night sky’s beauty\, negatively affects the ecosystem\, and creates an in-your-face waste of energy. But a new mindset and new technology are poised to slow — and perhaps reverse — this bane of modern life. Come Learn how you can safely light up your home without wasting energy\, disturbing your neighbors\, or creating an unhealthy environment for humans and wildlife. And learn about what options we all have as citizens of Boston to improve the quality of nighttime lighting in our neighborhoods and throughout the city. \nLocation: Arnold Arboretum’s Weld Hill Building\, 1300 Centre Street\, Roslindale.  Off-street parking is available. Enter the building at the lower level. \nVoluntary sign up here
