The town hall will focus on the existential threat posed by climate change and explain the Green New Deal\, a stimulus package designed to combat both climate change and the burgeoning economic inequality in the United States. \nThe two-part program will include a group of passionate student speakers who will present the Sunrise Movement’s case for a Green New Deal. The second part will consist of a panel of activists\, community leaders\, and a health professional who will discuss the impacts of climate change on our communities\, and what we can do about it. DESCRIPTION:Long before the Green New Deal\, then-representative Ed Markey led the charge in the US House of Representatives for climate change legislation.  In the summer of 2010\, the United States was as close as it has ever been to addressing climate change at the federal level when the Waxman-Markey cap and trade bill passed the US House of Representatives.   \nThat is important context for the Green New Deal\, and a reason to learn more about it directly from its author.  The Green New Deal is aspirational\, goal-oriented legislation introduced by a legislator who has a  track record of delivering substantive and transformative legislation\, and who has a long history and deep understanding of the issues.   \nThis coming Wednesday evening\, August 21st\, Senator Markey will be in Framingham for a town hall discussion on the Green New Deal\, infrastructure\, transportation\, and more. Come join us for this two-session class to learn what you can do now to cultivate a beautiful landscape. We will focus on techniques for designing\, planting and maintaining a low-maintenance\, sustainable and environmentally responsible garden that is appealing in all four seasons. In addition\, you will be introduced to some new plants to try\, including lesser-known\, easy-care trees\, evergreens\, flowering shrubs\, bulbs\, perennials and ground covers for\nsun or shade\, wet or dry sites. Additionally\, the event will include information about electric cars as part of the Drive Green program of the Green Energy Consumers Alliance. \nThis event will feature the two companies that were chosen as installer partners after a careful vetting process.  \nBoston Solar will present rooftop PV technology\, why people are installing it\, and how it benefits the environment and your wallet.  They will also explain how the current Massachusetts incentive program works.\nN.E.T.R. Inc. will present information about air source heat pump technologies\, the ways heat pumps are used in homes today and the many current rebates available.\n\nBoth companies will be available for individual questions and consultations. Additionally\, a representative from Green Energy Consumers Alliance will discuss the discounts available through their Drive Green program.  \nSolarize Mass Plus Needham is a partnership between the Town of Needham\, the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center\, the Mass. SUMMARY:Needham is Matting Change - Helping the Homeless Is  "In The Bag"
DESCRIPTION:Founded by a recent high school graduate\, @MattingChange aims to reconfigure single-use plastic bags into comfortable and durable sleeping mats for people experiencing homelessness. By putting a spin on a traditional textiles technique\, these mats can be made by anyone and provide critical relief\, especially in the colder months. The mats will be donated to Needham-based Generic Ministry to support their work with individuals experiencing homelessness in Boston.  This labor-intensive project needs the help of many hands\, ages 11 to 111. \nJoin the community in giving back\, while keeping bags out of the waste stream! A series of workshops will be held from 2:30-5pm on the early-release and no-school days of Wednesdays Sept. 25\, Oct. 9 Oct. 23 and Nov 6. SUMMARY:Needham Adult Education: Stop Mulch-Scaping and Start Landscaping!
DESCRIPTION:At some unknown point in time\, mulch– black\, orange\, brown\, etc. – became a part of the landscape\, but wouldn’t you rather have plants? Anywhere you can put mulch\, you can dig a hole and put in a groundcover plant. Groundcover plants = living mulches. Think of the money\, time and work you’ll save on mulching every spring. And groundcovers are the go-to plant\nfor low-maintenance gardens. Besides eliminating the need for mulch\, they keep weeds from crowding in; they provide an extra layer of color and flowers; and they help maintain soil moisture\, which means less watering. What’s not to like about that? Come learn what to do before you start replacing your boring old mulch with fabulous new groundcovers and find out which groundcovers are right for your garden.
