SUMMARY:EVs Are Greener Than You Think Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, Apr 21 2020\, 12:00pm – 8:00pm \nOnline \nElectric vehicles (EVs) are only as good for the climate as the sources used to generate electricity. In New England’s relatively clean electricity mix\, that means EVs reduce emissions by 75% on a per-mile basis compared to gas-powered cars. Thanks to state renewable energy targets\, there will be more zero-emissions resources on the grid every year\, amplifying the positive effect of EVs. But some Massachusetts towns and cities are leading the charge to demand even more renewable energy than is required by state law. Join Green Energy Consumers for this free hour-long webinar to learn how these initiatives are speeding the transition to a zero-carbon future. \nRSVP Now.

SUMMARY:Film Showing: The Biggest Little Farm-CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:CANCELED – MAY BE RESCHEDULED AT A LATER DATE \nFirst Parish in Needham\, Unitarian Universalist\, 23 Dedham Ave.\, Needham\, will host a showing of the film The Biggest Little Farm on Sunday\, April 26 at 7 p.m. This 91-minute award-winning film documents the eight-year quest of John and Molly Chester (and their dog) as they trade city living for 200 acres of barren farmland and a dream to harvest in harmony with nature. Featuring breathtaking cinematography\, captivating animals\, and an urgent message to heed Mother Nature’s call\, THE BIGGEST LITTLE FARM provides us all a vital blueprint for better living and a healthier planet. \nFor parents: The film is rated PG for mild thematic elements\, including pictures of dead chickens and ducks\, killed by coyotes. Here is a review by Parent Previews which gave the film an A+ rating but concluded that it “really isn’t a movie for little kids\, although older elementary school age children will probably enjoy it\, especially if they love animals.” \nYou can watch the trailer here. \nTickets are $10 at the door\, with proceeds going to the New England Wind Fund. \nDoors will open at 6:30 p.m.\, with informational tables about local environmental initiatives.

SUMMARY:Sustainable Wellesley Hosts Online Educational Forum About Leaf Blowers and Our Health
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that the exhaust from single stroke engines contains PM2.5\, shorthand for particulate matter that is 2.5 microns in size\, which hangs in the air a long time and lodges in lung tissue.*  Use of this equipment by landscaping services and homeowners in Needham is widespread\, and affects all of us. \nTo learn more about this issue\, join Sustainable Wellesley for a conversation about how lawn care practices impact public health. Jamie L. Banks\, PhD\, MS and founder of Quiet Communities\, a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to protecting public health\, the environment\, and quality of life by reducing noise and related pollution\, has worked with over 30 towns to mediate discussions with residents\, professionals and town officials. With input from a panel of experts\, including Dan Mabe of American Green Zones Alliance (AGZA)\,  Banks will share ways her work has led to cleaner\, quieter living in towns including Lexington and Concord\, MA\, Southampton\, NY and Chevy Chase\, MD. \nSpace is limited\, so Register for the webinar now. Open/view event flyer. \nThe Forum is being co-sponsored by Sustainable Wellesley\, Wellesley Natural Resources Commission\, and Wellesley’s Sustainable Energy Committee. \n*Sources:  Quiet Communities and Harvard study \n

SUMMARY:The C-Change Conversation on Climate Science
DESCRIPTION:Watch the replay of this program on YouTube.\n\nWhy is is that the hardest questions to answer about climate change can be the most basic ones\, like: \n\nHow do we know climate change is real and caused by humans?\nWhat is the scientific consensus?\nWhat are the dangers?\nIs there hope?\n\nIt isn’t just that there is so much information. It’s also the challenge meeting your audience where they are. “Climate Change and You” is a presentation that does just that. It is an engaging and compelling program that uses visual data\, charts and photographs to provide an accessible overview of climate science and a clear-eyed assessment of the risks ahead. It focuses on the interplay of science\, economics and policy (including the benefits of moving to a low-carbon economy)\, rather than depicting climate change as an environmental or political issue. \nC-Change Conversations\, a New Jersey-based nonprofit organization\, developed the 50-minute presentation in consultation with independent climate scientists and public policy specialists and has presented it to more than 7\,500 people nationwide. \nJoin Green Needham and the Friends of the Needham Public Library at 2:00 pm on Sunday February 7th for a Webinar presentation of “Climate Change and You” by Dallas Hetherington from C-Change conversations\, with questions and answers following the program. \nBetter yet\, bring along a friend you’ve wanted to introduce climate change to\, but didn’t know how! \nRegister for free here at https://tiny.cc/needham-cchange/ . You will receive a link to the Zoom presentation two days before the program. \nMore information: Gay Ellen Dennett\, Program Specialist\, Needham Free Public Library\, at gdennett@minlib.net or 781-455-7559 x223.
