DESCRIPTION:The Re-Use-It Swap Shop at the Recycling and Transfer Station will re-open for donations and pick-ups Saturday\, April 1\, 2023. The Swap Shop hours of operation are Tuesday through Friday from 7:30 am to 3 pm and Saturdays from 7:30 am to 4 pm. Please note\, there is no drop-off after 3 pm on Saturdays. The Swap Shop area is also closed on Paint Saturdays\, which run every third Saturday from April through October.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an eye-opening conversation about the world of plastic\, including how it’s manufactured and why production has recently increased.   We will discuss the challenges of recycling plastic and explore the harmful effects of plastic pollution on our environment and human health.  The talk will include simple ways for the citizens of Needham to take an active role in reducing plastic production and consumption.  Our speaker\, Kathy Raiz\, from the Beyond Plastic’s Speaker’s Bureau and Green Needham’s Plastic Waste Reduction Team\, is excited to chat with you about how to make our community more sustainable. \nAbout the Presenter Kathy Raiz \nKathy has been a member of the Beyond Plastics Speaker’s Bureau from its inception in 2021. Since attending Judith Enck’s class on plastic pollution\, she has become eager to educate people about the negative impact that plastic has on the environment and personal health\, while encouraging citizens to take an active role in reducing plastic production and consumption. She is a member of Green Needham’s Plastic Reduction Team and is currently working to pass a plastic bag ban bylaw in the town. \nKathy has a BS from Tufts University and a MS in Human Resources Development from Villanova University. She works with various non-profit organizations as an HR Consultant. She lives in Needham\, MA with her husband and their two daughters. Kathy also enjoys teaching piano lessons and participating in community theater productions.

DESCRIPTION:JOIN THE CHARLES RIVER WATERSHED ASSOCIATION AND GREEN NEEDHAM ON SATURDAY\, APRIL 22ND FOR THE 24TH ANNUAL CHARLES RIVER EARTH DAY CLEANUP \nThe Earth Day Charles River Cleanup builds on a national effort as part of American Rivers’ National River Cleanup®\, which has removed over 25 million pounds of trash from America’s waterways. Our cleanup brings together over 3\,000 volunteers each year to pick up litter\, remove invasive species and assist with park maintenance along all 80 miles of the Charles River. \nBy volunteering with CRWA\, you’ll be able to participate in the cleanup of the parks\, forests\, and paths along the upper portion of our river in Newton\, Weston\, Wellesley\, Dedham\, and more! In an effort to be more environmentally friendly\, we encourage volunteers to bring their own pair of gloves. Trash bags\, picker-uppers\, and other cleanup materials will be supplied to those who wish to participate. \nREGISTER AS AN INDIVIDUAL\, FAMILY\, NON-PROFIT\, OR SCHOOL!\nIndividuals\, families\, and non-corporate groups are encouraged to participate in this year’s Charles River Cleanup on Saturday\, April 22nd\, 2023. To support CRWA’s mission of protecting and preserving the Charles River\, we would greatly appreciate a suggested donation of $5 per person. \nREGISTER AS A GROUP\nClick here to get more information about this event.

SUMMARY:Needham Housing Coalition (NHC) Co-hosts Open Meeting at the Library
DESCRIPTION:The Needham Housing Coalition (NHC)\, on behalf of the Needham community\, was selected to be part of the Municipal Engagement Initiative program of the Citizens’ Housing and Planning Association (CHAPA)\, with the support of the Town of Needham. Together\, we want to advocate for more housing choice and help Needham build community awareness. \nNeedham Town Meeting members will be voting on two critical housing issues in 2024: \n\nZoning and funding for the Needham Housing Authority redevelopment\nRezoning to bring Needham into compliance with the MBTA Communities Law\n\nNow is an excellent time for us to get together to learn and work toward supporting good decisions for our town. This gathering is seeking to expand the outreach and engagement process and bring more people to the table. \nAt the meeting on November 29\, we will briefly introduce CHAPA and NHC\, provide background information about housing in Needham\, update you on the current housing initiatives – and then open it up for discussion to get your thoughts and ideas on how we can advocate for more housing options in Needham. DESCRIPTION:The Town has announced a public hearing to gather feedback on the Plan during their Tuesday\, January 9 meeting (in person and via Zoom). The text below appeared recently in the Town newsletter. \n“The Select Board will be holding a public hearing at its regular meeting on Tuesday\, January 9th on the Town’s Climate Action Roadmap\, a comprehensive plan that outlines Needham’s commitment to achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050\, as mandated by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and directed by the Needham Select Board. The roadmap is the result of extensive research\, community engagement\, and collaboration with various stakeholders and outlines specific targets\, milestones\, and actionable strategies across all sectors of our community. \nThe Board is interested in hearing the opinions of residents from a variety of backgrounds and welcomes any resident or interested party to provide testimony.  The hearing will be held at 6:05 pm on Tuesday\, January 9th at Town Hall in the Select Board Chambers and via Zoom (Webinar ID 890 6837 4046). \nHow to Provide Feedback at a Public Hearing \nYou may attend the hearing in person to share your comments or\, if you’re attending the meeting by Zoom\, please raise your virtual hand to ask to speak. DESCRIPTION:Are you curious about what the Town of Needham is doing to combat climate change? The Climate Action Plan Committee (CAPC) is hosting a meeting to introduce Needham’s first-ever Climate Action Roadmap. The event will include an overview of the Roadmap and the process by which it was developed\, and a brief presentation of accomplishments to date\, climate hazards\, Needham’s greenhouse gas emissions assessment\, and identified priority actions. The presenters will also discuss what comes next: How will we use and update the Climate Action Roadmap in the coming months and years? The meeting is open to everyone\, and all residents\, business owners\, Needham Boards and Committees are encouraged to attend. The event will include ample time for questions and discussion. The event will take place at Powers Hall in the Town Hall on June 5th from 6-7 pm. SUMMARY:Friends Annual Meeting and Program: Emily Norton\, “The State of the Charles River”
DESCRIPTION:The Charles River flows through Needham and nearby communities\, defining and enhancing our lives. Once a fetid waterway clogged with trash and polluted with industrial discharges and raw sewage\, this iconic natural feature today is hailed as one of the cleanest urban rivers in America. Still\, keeping the river healthy is an ongoing challenge. \nEmily Norton\, executive director of the Charles River Watershed Association\, will present a talk at the Needham Free Public Library entitled “The State of the Charles River.” She will give an update on the river’s ecological health\, climate change resiliency\, dam removal\, public access and the impact of riverside development. She will also discuss legislation aimed at protecting the river. \nAs director of the Charles River Watershed Association\, Ms. Norton oversees a staff of 18 scientists and advocates focused on protecting and preserving the Charles River and its watershed communities. She previously served as Massachusetts chapter director for the Sierra Club. Prior to that she was an environmental consultant and fundraiser for political groups and candidates. Ms. Norton served for 10 years as an elected city councilor in her hometown of Newton.
