SUMMARY:Economic Growth: Problem or Panacea
DESCRIPTION:Have we outgrown the planet? Is there an alternative to perpetual economic and population growth?  A free showing of the film “Growthbusters: Hooked on Growth” will take place at First Parish in Needham\, 23 Dedham Ave.\, on Sunday\, November 17 at 7 p.m. This thought-provoking documentary challenges our beliefs linking growth with prosperity and fulfillment. Weaving in interviews with leading thinkers\, animation and humorous skits\, the filmmaker documents his efforts to challenge the growth addiction of his own hometown.  Also featured are groups and individuals offering alternatives that they believe would move the world toward true sustainability.  Mike Hanauer\, the Director of GrowthBusters.org\, will lead the post-film discussion.

SUMMARY:Solar 101 Workshop - Fall 2013
DESCRIPTION:Postponed! — Due to the anticipated 2nd night for November’s Special Town meeting\, to be held on November 6th\, we have to find a new date for this session. \nWe also now know that the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center expects to inform communities whether they have been chosen for the fall 2013 Solarize Massachusetts program before Thanksgiving\, just a few weeks from now. We will select a new date for Solar 101 once we know whether we have been selected for the Solarize program. \n\nHave you wondered if solar is right for your house? If so\, join us as Green Needham once again offers our well-received Solar 101\, an introduction and guide to residential solar energy for homeowners\, as part of our ongoing “Living Green in Needham” series. \nWe will explain the technology and terminology of solar PV (photovoltaic) and solar thermal systems\, the criteria homeowners should consider before proceeding\, and acquisition and financing options (lease versus purchase). \nAs with our initial Solar 101 held in March\, we will invite Needham’s Building Commissioner\, David Roche\, to review what the Building Department will look for from the homeowner and the installer to ensure a safe and timely installation. \nWe will also cover the questions that homeowners should ask of installers\, and tips from Needham residents who have been through the process. \nFollowing the presentation\, we expect to have several Needham homeowners and their installers available for questions and consultation. \nPresented in partnership with Needham Community Education\, Solar 101 will take place on Wednesday\, November 6th from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm at Needham High School. \nRegister through Needham Community Education by phone at 781-455-0400 x 235 (8 am – 4 pm). There is a registration fee of $10. \nRefer to the Needham Adult Education Catalog/Fall 2013 (last page) for information on registering by fax\, mail or in person. The Solar 101 session is listed on page 6.

SUMMARY:EPA Public Listening Session on Reducing Carbon Pollution from Existing Power Plants
DESCRIPTION:On November 4th\, the Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public listening session in Boston to solicit ideas and input from the public and stakeholders about the best Clean Air Act approaches to reducing carbon pollution from existing power plants. This is one of eleven sessions being held around the country. \nThis is the next step in the President’s Climate Action plan following the recent issuance of carbon pollution standards for new power plants on October 10th. \nThe Clean Air Act gives both EPA and states a role in reducing air pollution from power plants that are already in operation. The law directs EPA to establish guidelines\, which states use to design their own programs to reduce emissions. Before proposing guidelines\, EPA must consider how power plants with a variety of different configurations would be able to reduce carbon pollution in a cost-effective way. \nThe feedback from these 11 public listening sessions will play an important role in helping EPA develop smart\, cost-effective guidelines that reflect the latest and best information available. The agency will seek additional public input during the notice and comment period once it issues a proposal\, by June 2014. \n\nRegistration for the Boston listening session\n\nEPA Contact: Dan Abrams – (617) 918-1067

SUMMARY:MCAN Climate Education Meeting

SUMMARY:Green Needham Meeting: The Water is Rising - Boston's Climate Action Plan
DESCRIPTION:The City of Boston is the economic engine for our region. In 2007\, Mayor Tom Menino recognized both the threats and the opportunities that climate change poses for the City and our region. The City of Boston developed its initial climate action plan that year\, and updated it in 2011. \n \nThe threat is visibly demonstrated in an image showing the large areas of Boston that would have been under 2 – 4 feet of water had Superstorm Sandy hit at high tide. Those are levels expected to occur in Boston by mid-century. \nClimate action will also bring significant economic benefits to Boston. Energy efficiency and behavior change can reduce greenhouse gas emissions from buildings\, transportation\, and solid waste-and produce net savings of over $2 billion by 2020 through lower energy bills. Demand for energy-and climate-related services will create thousands of jobs. And taking the necessary steps to prepare for climate-related change will ensure that Boston’s economic and social infrastructure remains strong. \nJoin us for a Green Needham meeting on May 20th as we welcome Brian Swett\, Chief of Environment and Energy for the City of Boston\, to Needham. \nBrian will take us through Boston’s comprehensive climate action plan\, addressing mitigation\, adaptation\, community engagement and social equity. He’ll talk about how responding to climate change is driving innovation\, economic opportunity and economic growth for Boston and our region. \nThrough this event\, Green Needham hopes to spark conversation and collaboration amongst local metro-west communities as we explore what climate change means to us—and how we can respond in ways that transform climate threats into opportunities for strengthening our local communities.
