SUMMARY:MCAN Meeting - Waste Policies for Reducing Climate Emissions
DESCRIPTION:Mass Climate Action Network’s first climate education and steering committee meeting of 2013 will take up the topic of “Waste Policies for Reducting Climate Emissions” on February 7th at the Cary Library in Lexington. \nLynne Pledger of Clean Water Action will talk about the connection between climate change and waste. Prior to 2009\, the EPA calculated climate emissions from waste only in terms of the emissions from landfills and incinerators. But now\, using “systems-based accounting\,” EPA calculates that 42% of GHG from the U.S. can be attributed to our accelerated production and disposal cycle. \nLynne will look at the life cycle of what’s in the trash can\, and explain how climate action plans at the state and local level can reduce emissions resulting from production\, transportation and disposal of food\, products\, and packaging. \nAlso at this meeting\, MCAN Executive Director Rob Garrity will talk about the upcomming legislative sessions in Massachusetts and the nation’s capital and what may be in store for climate activists. \nThe Massachusetts Climate Action Network is a coalition of over 40 community-based organizations in Massachusetts working on climate and sustainability issues (Green Needham is an MCAN member). MCAN holds is regular steering committee meetings in member communities around the region to encourage participation and allow chapter members from different communities to meet and to share ideas and experiences. All are invited to participate. There is no cost to attend. \nView information about this event on the MCAN calendar.

SUMMARY:Mass Energy Consumers Alliance 30th Anniversary Dinner and awards ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, Mass Energy Consumers Alliance holds an annual meeting and dinner to recognize organizations that have contributed to making energy more affordable and environmentally sustainable in Massachusetts. This year’s meeting\, its 30th Anniversary\, will be held on Tuesday\, December 4th at the Colonnade Hotel in Boston. \nSomewhat ironically\, the meeting had to be postponed from its original date because of Hurricane Sandy. But that means another opportunity to participate in this event. This year’s event features: \n\nA three-course dinner\, featuring locally-sourced food\nA keynote address by Secretary Richard Sullivan\, Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs\nSilent Auction\nAwards Presentations\n\n\nThis year\, Mass Energy will recognize: \n\nCape Wind – (finally) poised to become America’s first offshore wind farm. It will become a major contributor to the Commonwealth’s clean energy and climate goals.\nRenew Boston – Mayor Thomas Menino’s partnership with NSTAR\, National Grid\, Mass Energy\, Next Step Living\, and Action for Boston for Community Development (ABCD)\, which reached over 15\,000 Boston households and resulted in approximately 8\,000 home energy assessments. Approximately 2\,200 median income households have completed weatherization services under the Renew Boston no-cost offer.\nScituate Wind and the Town of Scituate – a public/private partnership that installed a 1.5 megawatt wind turbine on public land with significant public benefits and community support.\nEquity Industrial Partners and the City of Gloucester – a public/private partnership that will soon be producing clean energy from two wind turbines in Gloucester. The two 1.5 megawatt turbine are expected to sell about 10\,000 megawatt hours in net metering credits to the City of a Gloucester\, roughly equivalent to the City’s municipal energy needs.\n\n\nTickets to Mass Energy’s 30th Anniversary Dinner are $30 per person and are available here. \n\nMass Energy Consumers Alliance is a non-profit organization working to make energy more affordable and environmentally sustainable. Its Discount Heating Oil Service now serves 15\,000 members\, and its Green Power programs\, provides green electricity from local renewable sources to 7\,000 members strong. Its charitable programs provide heating assistance to those most in need.

SUMMARY:Better by Design - energy efficiency in Needham's public construction projects
DESCRIPTION:Join Green Needham on November 26th as we take a look at how energy efficiency is designed and built into Needham’s public construction projects. Reducing energy use and using energy as efficiently as possible is built into the process from initial conception and design through construction and operation. That attention not only contributes to the “on time and on budget” performance we have come to expect\, it also reduces our use of fossil fuels\, contributing to a cleaner environment and keeping more dollars in the local economy and reduces operational costs\, saving money for years to come. \nUsing recently completed projects as case studies\, architects from the design firms\, project managers from Needham’s Public Facilities Construction Division and members of the Permanent Public Building Committee will take us on a tour of how Needham builds energy efficient public buildings.

The topic of discussion at the October 23rd meeting (7:00 – 8:45 pm) will be “Tax the Bads\, Not the Goods: Is a Carbon Tax in our future?” Could such an approach work in Massachusetts? MCAN holds is regular steering committee meetings in member communities around the region to encourage participation and allow chapter members from different communities to meet and to share ideas and experiences.
