SUMMARY:Needham holds meeting about MBTA fare hikes and service cuts
DESCRIPTION:An important  public meeting in Needham will give area residents a chance to voice their opinions about the MBTA plans for steep fare hikes and service cuts. \nThe Needham Transportation Committee will hold a public hearing on the issue in the newly renovated Powers Hall at Town Hall on Monday\, February 27 at 7:30 p.m. \nAt a time when riding public transportation should be encouraged\, we are faced with changes that are certain to decrease ridership.  With no legislative solution to the problem\, MBTA riders will be asked to pay more for less service. Options being considered by the T include reducing service on Bus 59 or entirely eliminating the route\, which runs to Watertown Square and connects Needham to the Riverside Line.  Fares on the commuter rail would increase to $6.50 or $7.00 for a one-way trip to downtown Boston\, and service cuts are part of the plan. \nState Senator Richard Ross and  State Representative Denise Garlick will be attending the meeting to share their views\, and comments from the public will be taken.

SUMMARY:Rooftop solar panels - a Needham open house
DESCRIPTION:Have you thought about putting solar panels on your roof? Because of various state and federal tax credits and incentives\, solar is more affordable than ever. \nNeedham resident Ken Farbstein wrote to tell us about his experience: \n“I am a Needham resident who had a solar electricity system installed last year.  On Saturday\, February 11\, I am hosting an open house at my home from noon- to 2 p.m. at 307 Brookline Ave. I will be there to answer questions\, and will be joined by a representative of Sunlight Solar\, the company that installed the panels. \nI know it’s hard to believe\, but after taking advantage of tax rebates and receiving payments for the clean energy produced\, I am financially in the black with my photovoltaic system. Stop by and find out more!” \nSend Ken an e-mail or call him at 781 444-5525 with questions.

SUMMARY:Weatherization Seminar - Preventing ice damming
DESCRIPTION:As Needham residents remember from last winter\, ice damming was an all too familiar sight\, easily identified by the long icicles hanging precariously off the edges of roofs. Beyond the obvious danger of falling ice hitting people and property\, ice damming could be creating significant long-term damage to your home and health. Winter may be slow in coming this year\, but that makes it an even better time to get ready! \nOn Monday\, January 23rd please join us at 7:30 pm at the Needham Historical Society for a one-hour seminar on ice damming. Travis Estes\, a home energy advisor from Next Step Living\, will discuss the consequences of ice damming and how to prevent it by utilizing Mass Save incentives and rebates to properly weatherize your home. \nThis is the first in a series of weatherization seminars to be presented this winter by Green Needham in partnership with Next Step Living.

SUMMARY:Why 21st Century Children Need Nature - Community Presentation by David Sobel
DESCRIPTION:With all those good computer games\, IPhones\, on-demand TV shows and Skype\, why should children bother going outside? Or why should parents encourage them to play in the woods. Don’t they get enough fresh air and exercise playing soccer? \nA growing number of studies show that nature is good for kids—good for their health\, their academic achievement\, their sense of self. \nAt this community presentation on October 20th\, 2011\, kicking off year two of the Needham Public Schools’ Eco-Explorers project\, author David Sobel will both translate some of the research and give examples of parenting strategies that help children to develop a healthy relationship with the natural world. \nWe especially invite parents\, teachers and both middle & high school students to this presentation at the Newman School Auditorium at 7:00pm on Thursday\, October 20th\, \nIf you can\, join us early for a Science Center & Eastman Trail Open House from\n3:15 pm – 6:30 pm. Join members of Girl Scout Troop #73121 in their Service Learning Project and visit the newly renovated Science Center.

SUMMARY:Public Hearing on the Stretch Code and other Green Communities Qualifications
DESCRIPTION:The Board of Selectmen will hold a Public Hearing at 7:30 pm on Tuesday\, September 27\, 2011 in the Charles River Conference Room of the Public Services Administration Building at 500 Dedham Avenue. \nThe Green Communities Study Committee has recommended to the Board of Selectmen that the Town adopt the Stretch Code as part of its endeavor to become a Green Community.   The Stretch code is an energy saving modification to the building code.  The Board of Selectmen invites all residents and interested parties to provide input at this meeting. \nThe Public Hearing is an important opportunity for Needham residents to express their support for becoming a Green Community. The Selectmen will weigh this input when they discuss becoming a Green Community at one of their upcoming meetings. \nFollowing the Selectmen’sr discussions\, the final steps to becoming a Green Community are: \n\nAn affirmative vote by the Board of Selectmen to put the Stretch Code on the warrant for the November Town Meeting. (This would likely be followed by a vote on recommending adoption of the Stretch Code to Town Meeting.)\nAn vote by Town Meeting to adopt the Stretch Energy Code.\nAn affirmative vote by the Selectmen to apply for Green Community status (this could be done before or after the Town Meeting vote).\nSubmission of the Green Community application by the Town Manager to the Commonwealth’s Green Communities Division.\n\n\nUpon being designated a Green Community\, Needham will be eligible for a grant from the Green Communities program. More importantly\, the Town will have set itself on the path to reducing energy use\, saving money and becoming a more sustainable community. Needham would join 74 other Massachusetts cities and towns encompassing over 50% of the state’s population. \nInformation on the Stretch Code and other Green Communities qualifications can be found on the Town’s website at www.needhamma.gov/gcsc. \nPublic comments may also be directed to the Board of Selectmen\, c/o Public Services Administration Building\, 500 Dedham Avenue\, Needham\, MA or scincotta@needhamma.gov.

SUMMARY:Needham Events on Moving Planet Day\, Sept. 24
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, September 24\, Needham will be participating in the Moving Planet event\, a worldwide day of action advocating clean transportation – a planet moving under human power and clean energy\, not powered by fossil fuels. \nGreen Needham is partnering with Needham Bikes and the Needham Community Farm to sponsor two events\, a local bike ride from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and\, at 1:00 (updated time)\, a longer bike ride to Boston Common to join the Moving Planet Rally. \n\nThe local event will be a family-friendly 1.5-mile bike ride during which Green Needham will highlight the town’s alternative energy projects and local efforts to promote sustainability. Participants will meet at the High Rock School at 10 a.m. for an informal presentation on solar energy projects (including the new panels at that school) and residential installation options. \nAt the Recycling and Transfer Station\, we’ll stop to discuss two Green Needham projects there: the Wind Power Feasibility Study and a possible Solar PV installation\, as well as composting and recycling initiatives. At 11:30 a.m.\, we’ll end the ride at the Needham Community Farm for a PICNIC LUNCH (bring your own) and learn about the NCFs mission to encourage a more sustainable lifestyle through farm-based education and community awareness events. \nFor the second Moving Planet event\, Needham Bikes will host a 13-mile ride from Needham Town Hall to Boston Common to join the Moving Planet Rally. Leaving at 1:00\, riders will go through the Arnold Arboretum\, and then along the Southwest Corridor Park. A map of the route from Needham Town Hall to Boston Common is available here. \nMore information can be found here at the Needham page on the Moving Planet site. \nFor questions or suggestions\, please contact Tad Staley or Debbie Schmill.

SUMMARY:Green Needham Meeting - Understanding the Stretch Code
DESCRIPTION:Following a positive recommendation from the Green Communities Study Committee in August\, Needham will  be considering adopting the Stretch Energy Code\, a required step to becoming a Green Community. \nGreen Needham’s September meeting will feature an informational program explaining the stretch code. This amendment to the state’s existing building code\, which may be adopted by cities and towns\, requires new buildings and major renovations to be more energy efficient. \nWhat would the adoption of the Stretch Code mean for you?  Green Needham’s program will provide an explanation of the code and\, more importantly\, offer the opportunity for building professionals\, town officials and staff\, and the general public to get their questions answered. \nThe lead presenter will be Greg Krantz\, who has done in-depth Stretch Code meetings for communities who are about to make a decision.  He is a lead trainer for HERS raters and currently manages the Energy Star New Homes program for Massachusetts.  Also speaking will be John Keohane\, a Home Energy Rating System (HERS) rater from Dedham who spoke to Needham’s Green Communities Study Committee last spring. \nAdopting the stretch code is one step in the process of becoming a “Green Community\,” a designation which would make Needham eligible for funding to support its energy efficiency and renewable energy projects\, and provide access to innovative energy programs as well as additional technical support and assistance from the Green Communities Division of the Commonwealth’s Department of Energy Resources. \nSeventy-four Massachusetts cities and towns have already become Green Communities.
