SUMMARY:Green Energy Tour of Needham Homes
DESCRIPTION:Information on each of the homes in the Green Energy Tour is available here. \nYou don’t have to travel far to see examples of homes with the newest clean energy technology. On Saturday\, June 11\, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.\, the League of Women Voters of Needham will host a green energy open house event. Six Needham homes will be showcased\, with features that include solar electricity\, solar hot water\, co-generation of electricity and heat\, radiant floor heating\, older home weatherization retrofit\, and sustainable yard. Also featured will be the first Needham home to install geothermal heating and cooling. \n“Needham residents may not even realize that their neighbors have innovative systems to produce energy\,” said Susan McGarvey\, one of the event organizers. “We’d like people to know about federal and state incentives that make green energy more affordable. We’ll also include tips about energy efficiency\, since that is a way every household can reduce their energy use.” \nParticipants should come to the Webster Street entrance of the high school before 12:30 p.m. to pick up maps or buy tickets. They can decide which homes they would like to visit. At each site\, homeowners and possibly installers will be on hand to answer questions and explain their systems. \nAdvance tickets are available for $5.99 from www.BrownPaperTickets.com (search “Needham”) or for $7.00 at the door on the day of the event. Children 18 and under are free.  Tickets are also available from League members. \nFor more information call Susan McGarvey at 781 444-5286 or visit www.lwv-needham.org

SUMMARY:New England Wind Energy Education Project Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The New England Wind Energy Education Project (NEWEEP) will host a 1-day conference and workshop on June 7th in Marlborough for policymakers\, engaged citizens\, educators\, students\, utility representatives\, and the media to learn more about wind energy and the wind development community. NEWEEP is funded by the US Department of Energy’s Wind Powering America initiative under a 2-year grant. \nThe conference/workshop will focus on presenting balanced information relevant to issues of importance to individuals and communities affected by wind energy proposals throughout New England\, including environmental and economic benefits as well as siting concerns. Our goal is to ensure that participants know where to go to obtain the latest research\, identify areas where more research is needed\, and identify strategies for continuing the NEWEEP effort. \nThis one-day conference/workshop will start with presentations and discussion panels. In addition\, facilitated breakout sessions will allow participants to collectively brainstorm issues associated with wind development\, siting\, and permitting\, and to identify areas where more credible research is needed and how to oversee and fund it. \nNEWEEP’s premise is that wind energy has benefits and that responsibly-sited wind power has a role to play in New England\, but\, not every place is the right place for wind generation. NEWEEP’s mission is to seek and make available the best information possible to support good decisions. \nThe conference/workshop is intended for: \n\n* Policy implementers-including state\, regional and local regulatory/planning authorities\, municipal officials (e.g. selectmen\, planning board\, board of health\, etc.)\, siting and permitting officials and staff\nPolicymakers-including legislators\, politicians and regulators\nEngaged citizens-including those impacted by existing or planned wind power projects\, members of local energy committees. Community organizations either supportive of or concerned about wind energy in their midst\nEducators\, students\, utility representatives\, the press\, and members of the general public interested in learning more about wind energy\nThe wind development community\n\nFurther information about the conference (including registration information when available) is at the NEWEEP web site.

SUMMARY:Townwide Clean Up Day
DESCRIPTION:Needham celebrates Earth Day by helping prepare the town for its 300th birthday. On April 23 the Needham300 committee is organizing a town wide clean up day. People can sign up individually or as a group. Volunteers will spread out over town to pick up trash in several public open spaces. \nVolunteers are asked to gather at the Newman School at 8:30 a.m. for coffee and donuts. \nOnce there they will be given yellow trash bags and assigned to open areas around town. When the trash is cleaned up the bags can be left at each individual site where town workers will come pick them up. \nResidents are encouraged to gather groups of people to help with this event. Hundreds of volunteers will be needed to cover all the sites in town that the beautification committee has identified to be in need of a clean up. \nSend an e-mail to the 300 Committee or contact Joe Quinnan at 781-929-0121 if you plan to participate. Volunteers can just show up that day\, too\, though it would be helpful for the organizers to know how many people will be there.

SUMMARY:Regional Transportation Needs Workshop will be held in Needham
DESCRIPTION:The Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is developing Paths to a Sustainable Region\, the next regional Long-Range Transportation Plan. \nPaths to a Sustainable Region will guide federal investment in the transportation system over the next 20 years. For any major transportation project inclusion in this plan is critical. While being in the plan certainly does not guarantee that it a project will be built\, virtually the only major projects that will be considered for construction are the ones that make their way into this plan. \nOne of the first steps in developing the Plan is to assess the transportation needs of the region. A series of workshops will be held in February to present the MPO’s draft needs assessment and seek input from the public. The MPO will use the final needs assessment in developing a set of projects and programs to address the region’s needs. \nThe workshop will be held at the Needham Public Library on Tuesday\, February 15th at 5:30 pm. \nMore information on the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization is available at their web site.

SUMMARY:December Meeting - Energy Security and National Security
DESCRIPTION:How are the decisions we are making today on energy and climate – locally and nationally – vital to our future national security? \nPlease join us for a discussion about energy security and national security at our December 13th Green Needham Meeting. \nThe conversation will be led by two outstanding young American veterans. Jon Gensler and Wade Barnes are graduates of West Point and the Naval Academy\, respectively\, and both served in overseas deployments. \nJon and Wade will begin by describing what the choices we have made as a society on energy and climate change have meant to our armed forces and those who serve in them. They will outline how that experience has made clear how much our future national security depends on the choices we make next. Finally\, they will discuss some of the ways the military itself is pointing our way forward\, such as the Navy’s plans for a fossil-fuel free carrier task force. \nPreparing themselves to help shape our energy and climate future\, Jon and Wade are currently enrolled in joint degree programs at Harvard’s Kennedy School and business school (MIT/Sloan and Dartmouth/Tuck). \nRead more about them below. We look forward to hosting them in Needham and hope you will join us to participate in the discussion. \nJon Gensler \nJon Gensler was born and raised in Huntington\, WV\, where much of his family still resides. After graduating with the Class of 2000 from the United States Military Academy at West Point\, Jon served as a tank platoon leader and infantry mortar platoon leader with the 1st Battalion\, 68th Armor Regiment out of Ft Carson\, CO. After serving in Iraq from 2003-2004\, Jon returned to Ft Carson and completed his service in 2005. \nJon has since spent a year living abroad in New Zealand and over two years in sales for Lutron Electronics in Coopersburg\, PA. While there\, Jon co-founded a branch of the US Green Building Council in the Lehigh Valley and earned the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design professional accreditation (LEED-AP®). Jon is currently pursuing a dual MBA/MPA from the MIT Sloan School of Management and Harvard University’s John F Kennedy School of Government\, expecting to earn both in May 2011. He is a vibrant and strong advocate for clean energy development\, active with Operation FREE\, and brags about his West Virginia roots to anyone who will listen. \nWade Barnes \nWade Barnes is currently an MBA candidate at Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College and an MPA candidate at Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Prior to this he spent five years as a naval officer assigned to ships in the United States Navy. Wade completed four deployments to the Middle East and Southeast Asia during his service\, participating in a wide range of activities ranging from humanitarian aid efforts in the Pacific Rim to counter-narcotics efforts in the Gulf of Oman and anti-piracy operations near Somalia. \nSince departing the military Wade has worked at the Virginia-based energy firm Apex Wind Energy. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the United States Naval Academy\, and his interests include renewable energy and national security. In his free time Wade enjoys backpacking and SCUBA diving.
