DESCRIPTION:“Toxic America” with Dr. Sanjay Gupta will air on June 2 and 3 on CNN at 8:00pm ET. \nExploring how toxic chemicals in your town can make you sick isn’t the most pleasant subject\, but it’s an important one. \nThe first night\, June 2\, is called “Toxic Towns USA\,” and will focus on CNN’s year-long investigation into what’s happening in Mossville\, Louisiana. For decades\, residents there have claimed to be sick from\nchemicals in the air. \nOn June 3\, CNN moves into “Toxic Childhood\,” which explores the effects of unseen chemicals all around us. SUMMARY:Massachusetts Walk to School Day
DESCRIPTION:Needham schools will be celebrating Massachusetts Walk to School Day on Wednesday\, May 5\, 2010. All public schools in Needham will be joining schools from across the state to celebrate the fourth annual Massachusetts Walk to School Day. \nTwo thousand students from our town are expected to walk to school that day along with parents\, teachers and community leaders. Each school will organize its own special event to encourage participation in the May 5th walk and to prep students and parents for a fun-filled month of walking and biking events as part of the May  Needham in Motion initiative. \nAll the elementary schools along with Pollard Middle School are partner schools with the Mass Safe Routes to School program\, along with over 250 other schools across the state. Walk to School events work to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children\, pedestrian safety\, traffic congestion\, concern for the environment and building connections between families\, schools and the broader community. \nInformation about the Walk to School programs at each of Needham’s schools and contact information at the schools is available here.

SUMMARY:Volunteers Needed for Earth Day at Newman School
DESCRIPTION:Newman Earth Day 2010\nFriday\, April 16\nVolunteers Needed! \nThe New England Aquarium is coming to Newman for Earth Day! This year’s Earth Day theme is water\, so we’ve invited the Aquarium to bring its “Whale Day Program” to our school. The program consists of 12 interactive exhibits about whales and other marine animals\, as well as a 16-foot high\, 42-foot long life-size inflatable right whale called Calvin. The program will be set up on the tennis courts (weather permitting)\, which will be transformed into a colorful “Newman Ocean!” \nThe Newman Earth Day Committee is planning an amazing day for our children but\, we need you to “dive in” and make this a success! Each station of the exhibit requires adult supervision. We need a minimum of 24 volunteers (at least 12 per shift) to cover the following two shifts: \nShift 1: 8:30am to 12:00pm\nShift 2: 11:30am to 3:00pm \nIf you are able to help on Earth Day\, please e-mail Stacey Fallon at staceymcfallon@yahoo.com and let us know your availability. \nThank you!\nThe Newman Earth Day Committee

SUMMARY:Green Needham Meeting - April 14th
DESCRIPTION:Our next Green Needham meeting will feature a conversation about the Smart Grid with Needham resident and NStar Vice President of Engineering Larry Gelbien. \nPlease mark your calendars for Wednesday\, April 14th at 7:30 pm. (Please note this is a change of date.) \nSmart Grid is shorthand for a range of initiatives to improve and ultimately transform the electric grid\, the vital network we depend on to deliver electricity to our homes and businesses 24 hours a day\, 7 days a week. Managing the grid isn’t just a matter of moving electricity from one place to another. Electricity can’t be stored so grid operators are constantly balancing supply and demand in real time. An effective system not only ensures that we have electricity when we need it\, it also plays a role in how much we pay for it. \nLarry will talk about several NStar Smart Grid initiatives\, including: \n\nGrid Self Healing – today\, utility consumer have to report outages and the utility dispatches crews to make repairs. A smart grid detects failures and makes adjustments to keep power flowing until repairs can be made\, reducing costs and outages\nReal-time metering – Making choices that change how and when we use electricity can save consumers money and reduce the need to build additional power plants. Real-time metering will make that possible because it will allow utilities to know how much electricity they’re using at any moment.\n\nWe’ll also share the latest information about using your home electronics and appliances efficiently – you may be surprised by what your hear!

DESCRIPTION:Needham in Motion is a town-wide initiative to encourage people to go car-free for local trips. \nIn May\, there will be several activities and events in and around Needham that promote walking\, hiking and biking. In addition to these specific activities and events\, we are planning to have a custom web-based application that will enable participants to log their carbon-free miles. This application will be a useful way to encourage organizations to participate\, as their members will have the ability to log their miles\, track their progress and the totals achieved by their group and the entire town. \nThere are two agenda items for the meeting next week: \n\nFirst\, we need to concentrate on recruiting organizations to participate. Susan McGarvey and I have been working on a list of organizations (attached) that could be contacted. Again\, the web logging tool will be a useful device to encourage participation. So the discussion will be on ways to reach out to the various organizations who might get involved.\nDiscuss other forms of publicity for the campaign. In particular\, it would be great to get the sponsoring organizations to include a notice in a mailing to their mailing list / membership. Also\, posters\, news articles\, letters to the editor\, etc.

SUMMARY:Earth Hour
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday March 27\, from 8:30 to 9:30 pm\, the state of Massachusetts will be a participant in the second annual Earth Hour. The state will turn off all its own lights except those necessary for public safety. The city of Boston will do the same\, as well as numerous colleges and other institutions. Individuals from all over the world will also be turning off their lights for an hour. \nLast year was the first Earth Hour\, with 4100 cities in 88 countries participating. In the US\, 80 million American individuals and families joined in. The Earth Hour website shows some of the candlelight gatherings around the world and around living rooms and dining tables where people acknowledged their caring about the Earth and shared it with others. \nImagine such gatherings this year\, in homes\, in houses of worship\, maybe slightly orchestrated by someone who cares\, with people going around a circle saying what the earth means to them personally. Think about it. Who would you like to be with for a solemn\, joyful hour\, appreciating this wondrous planet?
