DESCRIPTION:Do you know why invasive plants are harmful beyond our gardens\, extending to the local food web? Are you curious about which invasive plants are in our area? How can we recognize them? How can we eliminate them from our own yards and community?\n\nDr. Eric Olson\, an expert on invasive plants\, will address these questions on Friday\, September 18 at 9:30 a.m. in the Needham Public Library\, at the League of Women Voters of Needham’s first League Friday Forum of the season. You’re invited to come and learn more about this important topic. \nDr. Olson is a professor in the Sustainable International Development Graduate Program at Brandeis University\, with a PhD in evolutionary biology and ecology\, specifically in the ecology of “tri-trophic” interactions: host plants\, the insects that feed on these plants\, and the wasps\, birds\, and other predators that feed on those insects. He also teaches courses in water & sanitation\, climate change\, ecotourism\, environmental impact assessment\, and environmental health. \nA question and answer period will follow. DESCRIPTION:It’s shocking to realize that 40% of the food in America is wasted – culled as imperfect and unsalable by producers\, discarded by grocery stores\, uneaten at restaurants and cafeterias\, and thrown away in people’s homes.  At the same time\, over 49 million people in America do not know where their next meal is coming from.  What can be done to address these two issues?  Green Needham and the League of Women Voters of Needham are co-sponsoring a forum on Thursday\, October 22 beginning at 7:30 pm at the Needham Library Community Room to discuss this issue. \nWe will present the problem and hear about what Massachusetts and the town of Needham are doing to find solutions.  You will also come away with tips for what you can do as a consumer and an eater.\n\nPlease join us.

SUMMARY:Film about Tackling Food Waste
DESCRIPTION:Watch the award-winning movie about food waste\, “Just Eat It\,” inspired the book “America’s Wasteland\,” by Wellesley High graduate Jonathan Bloom. Then hear from another Wellesley native\, Ashley Stanley\, founder of Lovin’ Spoonfuls\, a non-profit organization that matches excess food with people in need. The event marks an increasing concern locally about food waste. As much as 40% of the food grown in the U.S. is never eaten\, although many people do not have enough to eat. SUMMARY:Sustainable Wellesley Program: Global Warming-What can You Do?
DESCRIPTION:Quentin Prideaux is a Partner in the management consulting firm Alder Associates and lives in Wellesley with his wife\, Delissa\, and two children; Alex (16) and Samantha (11).  He began learning about climate change in the 1990’s\, is the President of Sustainable Wellesley and a Board member of the Wellesley Cancer Prevention Project. The talks that Quentin gives cover the impacts and causes of climate change\, the actions we need to take\, and what it all means for Massachusetts and the Northeast. He will discuss why some have been confused about the science and\, although the subject is serious\, Quentin keeps it positive and lighthearted where possible.  Ideally a talk will lead into a question and answer session and/or a workshop where participants can discuss specific actions they will take – according to the wishes of the organizers. Quentin has a degree in Physics from Bristol University\, but as that was years ago he can promise to keep his talks non-technical. \nClick here for more information.
