DESCRIPTION:This annual event aims to raise public awareness. Many people may not realize that energy efficiency is one of the best ways to address climate change. In fact\, with robust action\, research shows that efficiency can get the United States halfway toward its climate goals. (Plus it saves money\,  creates jobs\, cleans the air we breathe\, and enjoys bipartisan support.) \nLast year\, more than 350 organizations\, companies\, utilities\, and local governments signed on as supporters\, and 59 cities\, counties\, states\, and universities joined the U.S. Senate in issuing proclamations. It’s hurting our ability to be compete\, impacting our way of life and contributing to an impending climate catastrophe.  But finally\, it appears Beacon Hill may be open to doing something about it\, with both House Speaker Robert DeLeo and Senate President Karen Spilka recently asking the business community for input on how to pay for desperately-needed investments in transportation. \nAt this presentation\, we’ll explore the challenges and some of the funding options that may be considered as soon as this fall. SUMMARY:Needham is Matting Change - Helping the Homeless Is  "In The Bag"
DESCRIPTION:Founded by a recent high school graduate\, @MattingChange aims to reconfigure single-use plastic bags into comfortable and durable sleeping mats for people experiencing homelessness. By putting a spin on a traditional textiles technique\, these mats can be made by anyone and provide critical relief\, especially in the colder months. The mats will be donated to Needham-based Generic Ministry to support their work with individuals experiencing homelessness in Boston.  This labor-intensive project needs the help of many hands\, ages 11 to 111. \nJoin the community in giving back\, while keeping bags out of the waste stream! A series of workshops will be held from 2:30-5pm on the early-release and no-school days of Wednesdays Sept. 25\, Oct. 9 Oct. 23 and Nov 6. For more information and to sign up\, please contact Aicha Kelley at The Center at The Heights at akelley@needhamma.gov or 781-455-7555. \nMaking a single mat requires 600 bags! If you have clean\, flimsy\, plastic checkout bags (#2 HDPE) to donate\, please drop them off in the Matting Change bin at the Center for the Heights or at 20 Chestnut St (south of Harvey’s) inside the front door.

DESCRIPTION:At some unknown point in time\, mulch– black\, orange\, brown\, etc. – became a part of the landscape\, but wouldn’t you rather have plants? Anywhere you can put mulch\, you can dig a hole and put in a groundcover plant. Groundcover plants = living mulches. Think of the money\, time and work you’ll save on mulching every spring. And groundcovers are the go-to plant\nfor low-maintenance gardens. Besides eliminating the need for mulch\, they keep weeds from crowding in; they provide an extra layer of color and flowers; and they help maintain soil moisture\, which means less watering. What’s not to like about that? Come learn what to do before you start replacing your boring old mulch with fabulous new groundcovers and find out which groundcovers are right for your garden. DESCRIPTION:Needham is close to becoming a Green Community\, joining 240 other Massachusetts cities and towns\, including 18 of our 20 comparable communities.   \nPlease join us at the Select Board’s public hearing at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday\, October 16\, 2019 in Powers Hall (second floor of Town Hall\, 1471 Highland Avenue) to show your support.  Residents and organizations may of course speak at the public hearing\, but it is really your presence that matters.  If you can’t be present\, you can let the Select Board know of your support with an e-mail to selectboard@needhamma.gov.  Positive action by the Select Board will enable Needham to apply for Green Community status in the 2019 designation round (the application deadline is November 22nd).   \nSee this October 14th article for additional information.

DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, October 27\, 6 pm to 9 pm\, the Needham Community Farm is having its annual Harvest Celebration and Silent Auction (see event details below). This is a fun and uplifting event with inspirational speakers\, lots of great auction items\, and of course\, delicious food. Most importantly though\, the funds raised at this event support food donations for families in need in our community\, as well as environmental education and community building programs for the entire community.  \n\n\nGreen Practices\nWe are taking special care to implement green practices for this event! Considerations include managing food scraps\, excluding single use plastics\, selecting menu items carefully\, and weighing the issues of washing dishes and glasses vs. using compostable items.\n\n \nAuction\nMany businesses from Needham and beyond have been highly generous\, providing a variety of goods and services to place in our auction: Categories include:\n\nArts & Crafts\nBeauty & Spa\nEnvironmentally friendly products\nHealth & Wellness\nHome & Garden\nOne-of-a-kind items \nRestaurants and Food \nWine & Beer\n\nREGISTER HERE\n \nDONATE HERE
