Green Energy Consumers runs a program called Drive Green that makes researching, test-driving, and buying or leasing electric cars easier and more affordable.<\/p>\n<p><b class=\"c\">Here&#8217;s why your next car should be electric<\/b>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Electric cars are better for the environment<\/b>&#8211; A battery-electric car running on electricity from the grid emits a third of the greenhouse gases compared to burning gasoline. Electric vehicles (EVs) also reduce the local air pollution that harms our public health.<\/li>\n<li><b>It\u2019s cheaper to drive on electricity than gasoline<\/b> &#8211; The average New Englander will save over $500 a year in fuel costs alone. Lower maintenance costs for EVs means that you\u2019ll also spend less time and money repairing your car.<\/li>\n<li><b>It\u2019s more convenient to plug-in at home than drive to gas stations<\/b> &#8211; EV drivers do the majority of their charging at home, eliminating the need to take detours to the gas station.<\/li>\n<li><b>Electric powertrains are quiet, zippy, and more fun to drive<\/b> &#8211; EV drivers are overwhelmingly satisfied with their car\u2019s performance, and most say they\u2019ll never go back to driving a gas-powered car.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/greenenergyconsumers.org\/drivegreen\">Click here to Drive Green now!<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_KQbPo1JNe8?t=5s\" width=\"560\" height=\"314\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b class=\"c\">Electric vehicles and solar panels: The perfect match!<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Solar panels and electric cars complement each other. If you install a solar array for your home through <b>Solarize Plus Needham<\/b>, the electricity you generate can be used to charge an electric car. This brings your transportation costs down to zero and reduces your carbon footprint dramatically.<\/p>\n<p>Your first step should be to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/solarizenow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">let us know that you are interested in Solarize Plus Needham<\/a>. However, that\u2019s not necessary to enjoy the full benefits of both. Here are a few easy ways to integrate solar panels and an electric car:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>You can stretch your solar array\u2019s energy output by upgrading your home\u2019s energy efficiency.<\/b> Investing in more efficient lightbulbs, appliances, or thermostats will free up solar energy to charge a car and decrease your overall energy costs without increasing the cost or capacity of your solar installation.<\/li>\n<li><b>Opt for a dual EV-charger\/solar inverter.<\/b> If you know you\u2019ll want to install a Level II charging station at home in the future, you can opt to purchase a solar inverter that\u2019s also a car-charging station. This equipment qualifies for the 30% Investment Tax Credit (ITC) on your federal taxes, and you\u2019ll be ready to charge when you get your car. SolarEdge has a good model.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019d like to size-up your solar installation to meet your car-charging needs, here are some tips to get started.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Figure out how much electricity your car will use.<\/b> This depends on the efficiency of the car you\u2019re interested in and your daily driving mileage. As an estimate, it will take about 3 kW of installed solar capacity in Massachusetts to charge a car that is driven 11,000 miles a year.<\/li>\n<li><b>Determine if it makes financial sense to size up.<\/b> Installing more panels will increase your upfront installation costs, but because you will be generating more energy, you will also accumulate more net-metering credits. However, avoid installing a system larger than 10 kW; at that size, your net-metering rate will be reduced, and it will take longer for your installation to pay for itself.<\/li>\n<li><b>Make sure your system is \u201cadd-on\u201d friendly if you don\u2019t want to install additional panels right away.<\/b> You can add more panels in the future to meet your charging needs.
