Every year Massachusetts generates <strong>5.7 million tons<\/strong> of trash, of which 2.2 million tons are exported to other states.\u00a0 In the face of serious environmental concerns and shrinking disposal capacity throughout the Northeast, Massachusetts has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/guides\/solid-waste-master-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Solid Waste Master Plan<\/a> with ambitious goals: <strong>reduce waste 30% by 2030 and 90% by 2050<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, we need good laws and policy; we need smart product design and manufacturer responsibility, but <strong>our individual actions<\/strong> are an important part of the problem and can be an important part of the solution.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Top Ten Actions <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>You<\/em> <\/span> Can Take to Reduce Waste<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><!-- Item 1 --><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-9498\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/RTS-commingle-orig-pic.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"95\" height=\"95\" \/><span style=\"color: #276cdc; line-height: 1.2em; font-size: 1.0em !important; font-weight: bold;\">1. Reduce or eliminate single-use items<br \/>\n<\/span>Single-use plastic items are convenient, but most are only used for a few minutes. Then they are burned, landfilled (where they can take hundreds of years to decompose), recycled (only about 25%) or are discarded and then decay into microplastics that pollute our soil and water. We can easily eliminate most of them from our lives. Start with reusable water bottles and reusable shopping bags. Avoid Plastic Packaging<br \/>\n<\/span>Choose products with more sustainable packaging when you shop. Using bar soap and bar shampoo and conditioners can eliminate many plastic bottles of personal care products. Buying a head of lettuce uses no plastic boxes. Buy less, and when you do buy, opt for Products Made to Last<br \/>\n<\/span>Does everyone who attends an event need (yet another) t-shirt?\u00a0 Do you really need so many decorations? Does the inexpensive &#8220;latest&#8221; fashion fall apart after a few washings? Buying less and avoiding products that are flimsy (such as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/earth.org\/what-is-fast-fashion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fast fashion<\/a>&#8220;) are easy ways to reduce the number of items in the waste stream.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ib\"><\/div>\n<p><!-- Item 5 --><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-9498\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/epa-take-food-waste-reduction-challenge-resized.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"95\" height=\"95\" \/><span style=\"color: #276cdc; line-height: 1.2em; font-size: 1.0em !important; font-weight: bold;\">5. Keep food out of the trash: avoid food waste and put remaining scraps to good use.<\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/doc\/massdep-food-waste-composting-fact-sheet\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More than 25%<\/a> of the waste stream in Massachusetts is estimated to be food waste, and one<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/study-suggests-u-s-households-waste-nearly-a-third-of-the-food-they-acquire#Waste-across-the-board\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> study<\/a> found that the average U.S. household wastes an amazing 31.9%\u00a0 of purchased food. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/food\/reducing-food-waste\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read tips and information<\/a> on reducing food waste.
