Waste is\u00a0<b>regret<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 think of \u201cwasted time\u201d, \u201ca waste of potential\u201d, \u201ca life wasted\u201d. Most tangibly, though,\u00a0<b>waste<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/clothes-recycle-toronto-pic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-5510\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/clothes-recycle-toronto-pic-150x150.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/clothes-recycle-toronto-pic-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/clothes-recycle-toronto-pic-144x144.jpg 144w, https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/clothes-recycle-toronto-pic.jpg 262w\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u00a0is anything we throw away<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 and\u00a0<b>waste is costly<\/b>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First we pay for something we don\u2019t use.<\/li>\n<li>Then we pay a second time to have it disposed of.<\/li>\n<li>We often pay a third time \u2013 without realizing it \u2013 through environmental damage and adverse health impacts.<\/li>\n<li>Resources \u2013 natural and manufactured \u2013 are finite, and many are scarce. Scarce resources increase in cost.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/donating-food-pic-wiki-commons.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-12989 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/donating-food-pic-wiki-commons.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/donating-food-pic-wiki-commons.jpg 196w, https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/donating-food-pic-wiki-commons-45x45.jpg 45w, https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/donating-food-pic-wiki-commons-147x150.jpg 147w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/><\/a><\/h5>\n<h5>To Address food waste, Green Needham supports<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>reducing waste,<\/li>\n<li>getting food to those in need,<\/li>\n<li>utilizing the remaining waste for uses such as compost or energy generation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Effective October 1, 2014, all Massachusetts businesses and institutions disposing of over one ton of commercial organic material per week are required to divert that organic material from disposal as trash.\u00a0 This threshold was lowered to a half-ton per week on November 1, 2022. This law has brought focus to the food waste problem and motivated food establishments to find creative solutions to reducing waste.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Green Needham\u2019s \u201c<b><i>Toward Zero Waste<\/i><\/b>\u201d initiative aims to use the five R\u2019s \u2013 <b><u>refuse, reduce<\/u>,\u00a0<u>reuse<\/u>, and <u>recycle<\/u> <\/b>\u2013 to address problems of waste. We are focused initially on\u00a0<b>three areas<\/b>\u00a0we believe can have the\u00a0<u>greatest impact and benefit locally<\/u>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<b class=\"c\">food<\/b>,\u00a0<b class=\"c\">community-wide recycling<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b class=\"c\">reduce\/reuse<b>.<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>Recycling and Reduce\/Reuse<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Needham has been a state-wide leader in residential recycling rates and reducing material sent to landfills and waste to energy plants. \u00a0Green Needham aims to increase <em>knowledge<\/em>, <em>access\u00a0 <\/em>and <em>use \u00a0<\/em>of recycling by the Needham community. We work closely with the <strong>Town&#8217;s Recycling and Solid Waste operations<\/strong> to support the excellent work they do, increase community capabilities and identify complementary resources.<\/p>\n<h4>Our Goals<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduce the amount of trash at the RTS:\n<ul>\n<li>Divert paper\/cardboard from the waste stream into the recyclable stream.<\/li>\n<li>Divert recyclable plastic, metal, and glass from the waste stream into the recyclable stream.<\/li>\n<li>Divert food waste from the waste stream into the RTS&#8217; new (effective 11\/1\/2022) food waste program.<\/li>\n<li>Donate clean textiles (old\/ripped clothing, curtains\/fabric, belts, shoes) to the &#8220;Textile Recycling&#8221; program.\u00a0<strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Donate used but still &#8220;usable&#8221; stuff, or bring it to &#8220;Swap-it&#8221; shop at the RTS when it is open (April 1 &#8211; Dec 1).<em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Decrease the contamination of Needham&#8217;s recyclables, thereby increasing our recycle rate, and ensuring that we get the best price for our recyclables.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Our Projects<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Improve signage<\/strong><\/em> at the RTS to educate the community about <strong><em>proper<\/em><\/strong> recycling practices.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Educate<\/strong><\/em> the community about the RTS&#8217; <strong><em>new food waste program<\/em><\/strong>, and encourage participation.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Educate<\/strong><\/em> the community about the State&#8217;s new (effective 11\/1\/2022) waste ban items:\u00a0 textiles and mattresses, and how to recycle these items.<\/li>\n<li>Provide and maintain <em><strong>informational<\/strong><\/em> resources about how to <strong><em>reduce\/repurpose<\/em><\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/projects\/living-green\/recyclopedia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Recyclopedia Needham<\/a> &#8211; an online compendium with information about how to recycle or donate all kinds of used, but still &#8220;usable&#8221; stuff.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/toward-zero-waste\/reduce-reuse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reduce\/Reuse<\/a> &#8211; simple steps that you can take to <strong><em>reduce<\/em><\/strong> the amount of &#8220;stuff&#8221; in your everyday life.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/toward-zero-waste\/recycling-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Recycling Tips<\/a> &#8211; links to Green Needham posts about recycling <strong><em>&#8220;best practices.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/toward-zero-waste\/ask-the-recycler-combined-table-version\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ask the Recycler<\/a> &#8211; frequently asked recycling questions at the Needham RTS, with the ability to ask your <strong><em>own<\/em><\/strong> question.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>What <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>you<\/em> \u00a0<\/span>can do:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Read our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/?page_id=16590&amp;preview=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Top 10 Zero Waste Actions&#8221;<\/a> and learn what lifestyle changes <strong><em>you<\/em><\/strong> can make do reduce your waste.<\/li>\n<li>Use the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/projects\/living-green\/recyclopedia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Recyclopedia<\/a> to find places to donate your used, but still &#8220;usable&#8221; stuff.<\/li>\n<li>Know about recycling something that&#8217;s not yet in the Recyclopedia? On June 7, 2016,\u00a0Green Needham and <a href=\"http:\/\/recyclingworksma.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RecyclingWorks<\/a> presented a free workshop for food service businesses in Needham, Newton, Wellesley, and other neighboring communities interested in learning about <b class=\"c\">diverting wasted food from the trash through food donation, composting, and other waste diversion strategies<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"_4n-j fsl\"><strong>Documentary Film<\/strong>. On April 10, 2016 Green Needham cosponsored a free film showing at First Parish in Needham, Unitarian Universalist. The award-winning 75-minute documentary about food waste, <strong>\u201cJust Eat It,\u201d<\/strong> was inspired by the book <em>American Wasteland<\/em>, by Wellesley High graduate Jonathan Bloom.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"s1\"><strong>\u201cToo Good to Waste: Creative Solutions for Reducing Food Waste\u201d<\/strong> was presented on October 22, 2015 at the Needham Library.\u00a0\u00a0Joshua Cook, Green Business Specialist for the Massachusetts Dept. of Environmental Protection, and Greg Smith, the Superintendent of the Needham RTS, spoke about state and local actions to reduce food waste. Food waste reduction tips for households were provided.
