We work collaboratively the Town government and with grassroots organizations such as the Needham League of Women Voters. O<\/span>ther grassroots organizations, mentioned below, played important roles in initiating, suggesting, or directing various projects.\u00a0 Support from Needham residents is key to the success of these initiatives and those yet to come.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a partial list of what makes Needham &#8220;green&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Sustainable-Needham-resized.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-17821\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Sustainable-Needham-resized-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Sustainable-Needham-resized-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Sustainable-Needham-resized-270x270.png 270w, https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Sustainable-Needham-resized-230x230.png 230w, https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Sustainable-Needham-resized-45x45.png 45w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/needhamma.gov\/DocumentCenter\/View\/45086\/Sustainable-Needham_Climate-Action-Roadmap?bidId=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Climate Action Roadmap<\/a><\/strong>: \u00a0In 2022 the Town established a <span id=\"isPasted\">Climate Action Planning Committee (CAPC) to guide the Town in developing a plan that meets or exceeds the State\u2019s climate mitigation and resilience goals, including a <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commitment to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050<\/span>.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/needhamma.gov\/DocumentCenter\/View\/45086\/Sustainable-Needham_Climate-Action-Roadmap?bidId=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sustainable Needham Climate Action Roadmap,<\/a> completed in early 2024, provides a plan for the Town, residents, community organizations, and businesses to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build climate resiliency in an equitable way. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green Needham, joined by the Needham League of Women Voters and Mothers Out Front Needham, developed the proposal to the Select Board that resulted in the establishment of the CAPC, and members of Green Needham are participants and contributors to its work.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/climate-action-plan-cap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read more<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/2022-0720-CEA-webpage-photo-for-GNC.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-15768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/2022-0720-CEA-webpage-photo-for-GNC-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/2022-0720-CEA-webpage-photo-for-GNC-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/2022-0720-CEA-webpage-photo-for-GNC-270x270.jpg 270w, https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/2022-0720-CEA-webpage-photo-for-GNC-230x230.jpg 230w, https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/2022-0720-CEA-webpage-photo-for-GNC-45x45.jpg 45w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><strong>Needham Power Choice:\u00a0<\/strong> The Needham Climate Action Plan Committee identified pursuing an electricity aggregation program as the most impactful action that the Town can take in the immediate term to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions<i>.<\/i> In March 2025 the Town announced the launch of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masspowerchoice.com\/needham\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Needham Power Choice<\/a>, which is a kind of group electricity buying program for a city or town, with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and stabilizing electricity costs. As of July 2023 it has produced nearly 29 million kilowatt hours of clean electricity! In 2023, in considering a Citizens\u2019 Petition submitted by the Green Needham Team, Town Meeting passed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/2023\/05\/single-use-plastic-bag-ban-overwhelmingly-approved-by-needham-town-meeting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Plastic Bag Ban<\/a>, which became effective in 2024. At the May 2024 Town Meeting, members considered another Citizens\u2019 Petition submitted by Team and overwhelmingly passed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/expanded-ban-on-single-use-plastics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ban on specific single-use plastic items<\/a>, including Styrofoam. The May 2025 Town Meeting Meeting again considered Green Needham initiatives and <a href=\"https:\/\/needhamobserver.com\/town-meeting-concludes-in-the-affirmative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acted to reduce use of single-use plastics<\/a> by adopting a Skip the Stuff policy, requiring Needham restaurants to stop the practice of automatically including plastic utensils\/plates with all take-out orders. A ban of black plastics was also passed, although without an enforcement mechanism. Both measures are effective as of January 1, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/solar-house-csm-B.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-17536\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/solar-house-csm-B-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/solar-house-csm-B-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/solar-house-csm-B-45x45.jpg 45w, https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/solar-house-csm-B.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Opt-in Specialized Energy Code:\u00a0<\/strong> Needham has taken an important step forward in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the building sector, ensuring that <strong>new construction<\/strong> is built for the net zero energy future. As explained on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.needhamma.gov\/5544\/Opt-In-Specialized-Stretch-Energy-Code\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Town website<\/a>, &#8220;Needham voted to adopt the Specialized Code during Special Town Meeting on October 30, 2023. The RTS also provides residents with the opportunities to safely dispose of a variety of hazardous materials that cannot be safely disposed of in regular trash. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.needhamma.gov\/3089\/Hazardous-Waste-Paint\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>See more<\/strong> <\/a>about April to October Paint Collection Days and the annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day (as well as reciprocal agreements with other local towns for Household Hazardous Waste collections). The program offered discounted solar panel installations to Needham homeowners and businesses. Solar power has gained in popularity in Needham. The project, a grassroots effort, is coordinated by the non-profit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baycolonyrailtrail.org\">Bay Colony Rail Trail Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/poster_VolanteFarms.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2505\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/poster_VolanteFarms-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/food\/farmers-markets-and-community-farms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Local Produce<\/a><\/strong>:\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.needhamfarm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Needham Community Farm<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/needhamfarmersmarket.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Needham Farmers Market<\/a> were developed through grassroots efforts.
