Plastics are all around us, but it\u2019s easy to switch to non-plastic alternatives!\u00a0\u00a0 Here is a checklist to get you started.\u00a0 Remember, the goal is progress<\/em><\/strong> over perfection.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 Many people making small\u00a0changes will have a larger impact than one person getting rid of all the plastic in their life.\"\"<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Kitchen<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Instead of\u2026<\/strong><\/td>\nChoose<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Plastic cutting board<\/td>\nBamboo, wood or marble<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Never microwave food in plastic containers, and steer clear of black plastic, which is made from recycled electronics and can contain flame retardants and heavy metals.<\/p>\n

Clothing<\/strong><\/p>\n

Instead of fabrics made from plastic, like polyester, viscose, nylon, acrylic, spandex, fleece etc., choose natural materials like cotton, linen, wool, hemp, bamboo, and Tencel.\u00a0\u00a0 Do not support fast fashion; instead choose clothing pieces that are timeless and durable.<\/p>\n

When washing clothes, choose detergent that is not packaged in plastic.\u00a0 Tablets or granulated detergent can be good options.\u00a0 Be aware, although they are marketed as biodegradable, many laundry sheets contain PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) which produces microplastics when dissolved.<\/p>\n

When you wash synthetic clothing, use a Cora Ball<\/a> or Guppy Friend<\/a> filter in your wash to reduce and capture the plastic particles. Wash in cold water and allow clothes to air dry instead<\/p>\n

Dining Out<\/strong><\/p>\n

Keep \u201creusables\u201d<\/em> handy in your purse, backpack, car, and\/or office. You never know when you might need a water bottle, commuter mug, utensil set, or straw.\u00a0\u00a0 Don\u2019t forget to bring a reusable glass or metal container for leftovers when you go out to eat.\u00a0 This reduces plastic and saves the restaurant money.<\/p>\n
