We can take actions to reduce food waste by:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/food\/reducing-food-waste\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reducing food waste in our homes<\/a><\/li>\n<li>getting food to those in need<\/li>\n<li>utilizing the remaining waste for uses such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/food\/home-composting-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">compost<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/food\/home-composting-alternatives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">energy generation<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Effective October 1, 2014, all Massachusetts businesses and institutions disposing of over one ton of commercial organic material per week are required to divert that organic material from disposal as trash. This threshold was lowered to a half-ton per week on November 1, 2022.\u00a0 This law has brought focus to the food waste problem and motivated food establishments to find creative solutions to reducing waste.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bulk-list\">\n<h4 class=\"gnc-project-subheader\">What <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>You<\/em> <\/span>Can Do:<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/projects\/living-green\/food\/reducing-food-waste\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reduce the amount of food waste<\/a> that you generate at home.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/2022-RSW-Forum-Needham-RTS-food-waste-recycling-pic.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16041 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/2022-RSW-Forum-Needham-RTS-food-waste-recycling-pic-300x224.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/2022-RSW-Forum-Needham-RTS-food-waste-recycling-pic-300x224.png 300w, https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/2022-RSW-Forum-Needham-RTS-food-waste-recycling-pic-768x574.png 768w, https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/2022-RSW-Forum-Needham-RTS-food-waste-recycling-pic-560x418.png 560w, https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/2022-RSW-Forum-Needham-RTS-food-waste-recycling-pic-150x112.png 150w, https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/2022-RSW-Forum-Needham-RTS-food-waste-recycling-pic.png 865w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Start <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/food\/home-composting-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">composting<\/a> your vegetable food scraps at home.<\/li>\n<li>Bring the food scraps that you can <em><strong>not<\/strong><\/em> compost at home (meat, dairy, bones, etc.) to the Needham RTS&#8217;s food composting bins. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/food\/home-composting-alternatives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Residents can drop off their food waste<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; <strong>including things like meat and dairy that can not be composted at home<\/strong> &#8211; in containers at the RTS in the area adjacent to the textile and book recycling containers (which are adjacent to the salt shed).<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t want to compost at home?\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/food\/home-composting-alternatives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hire a composting company<\/a> to collect your compost.\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Support those in need at the <a href=\"http:\/\/needhamcommunitycouncil.org\/food-pantry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Needham Community Council&#8217;s Food Pantry<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Explore ways that you can support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/food\/food-waste-food-justice-issue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">food rescue\/food justice programs.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Bring your restaurant leftovers home, and remember to eat them!
