{"id":112,"date":"2010-03-04T13:56:56","date_gmt":"2010-03-04T18:56:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/?p=112"},"modified":"2013-07-09T18:06:07","modified_gmt":"2013-07-09T22:06:07","slug":"update-on-renewable-energy-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/2010\/03\/update-on-renewable-energy-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"March 2010 Update on Renewable Energy Projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Green Needham&#8217;s wind feasibility study to evaluate the possibility of generating wind power at the RTS took several steps forward this month while a companion project determined that the site could also support 1 MW (Megawatt) of solar photovoltaic energy generation.<\/p>\n<p>Late in February, the Town received word that the Massachusetts <strong>Department of Environmental Protection<\/strong> (DEP) had <strong>approved the plans<\/strong> the Town had submitted for erection of the Meteorological Tower that will take the wind measurements at the Town&#8217;s RTS (Recycling and Transfer Station).<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in February,\u00a0 the Town&#8217;s Planning Department presented a proposed\u00a0<strong> zoning by-law <\/strong>allowing the construction of the tower at the RTS to the Planning Board.\u00a0 After review and approval by the Planning Board, the by-law will require approval at the May Town Meeting to allow construction to proceed.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/RTS_Solar.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-113\" style=\"float: right; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;\" title=\"RTS_Solar\" src=\"http:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/RTS_Solar-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Plan of RTS with possible wind &amp; solar installations\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/RTS_Solar-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/RTS_Solar-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While this work was proceeding,\u00a0 a parallel project has determined that the RTS could also support <strong>solar photovoltaic panels<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 A preliminary site survey was conducted showing that a ground-mounted array of solar PV panels could generate between 1 and 1.5 MW\u00a0 (Megwatts &#8211;
