A May night-sky podcast description is available from <a href=\"https:\/\/skyandtelescope.org\/observing\/sky-tour-podcast-may-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sky and Telescope<\/a>, but here is the short of it:\u00a0Venus is a spectacular &#8220;evening star&#8221; in the west this month,\u00a0while sinking toward the horizon; Planet Mercury will rise into view and be very close to Venus on the\u00a021st;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/skyandtelescope.org\/observing\/big-dipper-spring-sky-sights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Big Dipper<\/a> will be nearly overhead. You can even participate in a citizen-scientist activity by\u00a0observing the constellation Leo from May 14-23! For instructions how, see below<em>.<\/em>\u00a0In the middle of a global calamity, the beauty of the starry night sky can soothe the soul and remind us of of what unites all of humanity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How-To: Constellation Leo observations with Globe At Night<\/strong><br \/>\nTo learn to identify Leo,\u00a0watch the first 3:30 minutes of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=46NDGFkzTfs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this educational video<\/a>. Before going outside, set your smartphone on lowest screen brightness with the Globe At Night\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globeatnight.org\/magcharts\/leo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">magnitude charts for Leo set at 40N<\/a>. After your eyes have adjusted to the dark for 10-15 minutes, compare the Leo you see in the sky to the best-matching chart, which you can zoom as needed. Report your observation at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globeatnight.org\/webapp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.globeatnight.org\/webapp\/<\/a>\u00a0either straight off or after you get back into your home.
