Picture a place where traffic flows seamlessly, and public transportation – all electric – is extensive and runs frequently. Picture a place where the cars on the road whisper instead of roar and have no tailpipes that release noxious car exhaust.

Part of this vision, of course, already exists. This month, as we celebrate Green Needham’s twentieth anniversary, we focus on Electric Vehicles.

Electric vehicles are available at a variety of price points (don’t forget used!), and Massachusetts rebates of up to $3500 are available. EVs are an important source of climate change mitigation, especially when the electricity supply has a high percentage of renewables. EVs also have vital co-benefits. They improve air quality and eliminate tailpipe emissions of pollutants that are damaging to human health. According to the American Lung Association, “widespread transition to zero-emission passenger vehicles and electricity would drastically improve health across the United States.”

And don’t forget, EVs are a great ride! They drive smoothly, with lively acceleration, and their quiet engine makes it easier to hear conversation or music while traveling. The maintenance cost for this comfortable ride is substantially lower than for gas cars.

Green Needham has long promoted EVs, sponsoring EV showcases over the years, publicizing the Green Energy Consumers Alliance Drive Green program, and encouraging the Town to adopt a Zero-Emission-First Vehicle Procurement Policy that prioritizes EVs when the Town purchases or leases light-duty vehicles.

Join Green Needham on Saturday, May 30, 2026 from 12-2 p.m. at Copley Motorcars, 37 Chestnut St., Needham, to see a variety of electric vehicle (EV) cars, learn about e-bikes, and view electric lawn equipment from Needham Garden and Hardware.

What you can do:

Inform yourself about EVs. Visit one of Green Needham’s EV showcases or get advice from a Green Needham EV coach to help you get started or answer specific questions.

Explore the Green Energy Consumers Alliance Drive Green section, which is packed with information about EVs, including comparisons of specific models, information about rebates and charging, discussion of health and environment benefits, recordings of webinars, and more.

Don’t forget efficiency! Like gas-powered vehicles, some EVs are more efficient than others, using less electricity to travel the same number of miles. There are various ways to measure efficiency; the EPA sticker on the car will give the information. And of course, the way you drive can increase or decrease efficiency. Many websites give tips on efficient driving and offer ratings on the efficiency of different models.

Check out the Town of Needham’s Mobility Page for a list of local charging stations.

Already have an EV? If you charge your car at home but don’t have solar panels, make driving even greener by signing up for the Needham Power Choice 100% Green option, which provides 100% of your electricity from new renewable sources in the New England region.

Not ready for an EV yet? See how you can electrify yard equipment. The May 30 showcase (see above) will display electric lawn equipment from Needham Garden & Hardware.

Looking ahead: The 2025 “Big Beautiful Bill” ended the EV federal tax credit, which had originally been scheduled to continue until 2032. As a result, sales have dropped nationally in the first quarter of 2026. Fortunately, in Massachusetts, state incentives have continued and — more good news — affordable new EV models are expected to be on the market in 2027–2028. Green Needham plans to continue its promotional activities, working with the Town to educate and encourage Needham residents to adopt electric vehicles. So yes — walk, cycle, take public transit, and when you do drive, head into the future with a clean, quiet EV ride.

Think for a moment about the possibilities of a future Needham.
