Certainly, fine teachers and administrators, thoughtful curricula and learning materials, and flexible physical spaces designed to enhance learning. But wait — the HVAC system?

Think of the school buildings of your past. Can you say how the cooling (if any) and heating was delivered, what equipment tempered the air you breathed, and where the energy came from? Probably not, for these were matters of remote basements, little-accessed rooftops, and the mysteries of the grid. But today, with our knowledge of climate change, greenhouse gas emissions, carbon footprint, and climate resiliency, the issues of heating/cooling and the sources of electricity are at center stage.

Imagine students learning the sobering facts about climate change but at the same time being reassured by the knowledge that their school is highly energy efficient, uses the constant temperature of the ground to provide efficient heating and cooling, and creates its own solar energy to offset electrical usage. What an incredible educational opportunity to be able to study and analyze the technology of the future in their own school building!

Among the many elements of sustainable design in the new Pollard school are the extensive implementation of two of the most cost-effective energy technologies now in widespread use – ground-source heat pumps for heating & cooling the new facility and extensive solar PV to generate electricity on-site.

Geothermal heating and cooling

An all-electric geothermal system (Ground Source Heat Pump) is crucial to achieving a highly energy-efficient building. This system will both heat and cool the building, achieving high efficiency by utilizing the relatively stable temperature underground. A closed-loop network of pipes circulates fluid underground and into a heat pump, thus drawing heat from the ground during the winter and injecting heat into the ground in summer. Since the system is all electric, there are no on-site emissions; since the efficiency is so high, operating costs are lower than a fossil fuel system. Importantly, a geothermal system triggers financial rebates and grants that substantially reduce its cost — incentives which are not available for a fossil fuel system. See more information about geothermal systems.

Needham already has experience with ground source heat pump technology. A geothermal system installed at the Public Services Administration Building (PSAB) in 2011 has made it the Town’s most energy-efficient building, and one that has required minimal maintenance over the fifteen years since.

Solar Panels

The design goal is to make Pollard Middle School a net-zero building, producing enough renewable energy to cover the amount of power it uses. The first step is to make the building envelope and systems highly energy efficient. Geothermal heat pumps, efficient lighting, and a highly efficient building envelope reduce energy and electrical use substantially, with solar panels generating electricity that will supply (and offset) much of the building’s electricity consumption. (An initial estimate shows the potential for 700 kW of solar PV on the Pollard roof.) In this way, the Town’s second most energy-intensive building could become a building with no carbon footprint, making a substantial contribution to the goals of Needham’s Climate Action Roadmap.

For information and FAQs about the green features of the project, see the Sustainability section of the Pollard Middle School Project website.

Submitted by Eleanor Rosellini.

What contributes to a good education?
