{"id":5364,"date":"2015-11-23T21:03:40","date_gmt":"2015-11-24T02:03:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/?p=5364"},"modified":"2017-02-15T18:40:41","modified_gmt":"2017-02-15T23:40:41","slug":"good-enough-to-eat-solutions-for-reducing-food-waste-program-to-be-held-dec-8th","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/2015\/11\/good-enough-to-eat-solutions-for-reducing-food-waste-program-to-be-held-dec-8th\/","title":{"rendered":"Film Showing and Presentation About Food Rescue Organization Coming Up on Dec. 8th"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Americans are wasting more than $165 billion worth\u00a0of food every year according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).\u00a0 Green Needham&#8217;s <a title=\"Program on Reducing Food Waste in Needham\" href=\"http:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/2015\/11\/program-on-reducing-food-waste-in-needham\/\" target=\"_blank\">October 22nd program on Food Waste<\/a>\u00a0 was a first step to bring together the Needham community to take action locally.\u00a0 But Needham is far from alone in this effort.\u00a0 This summer, Green Needham joined with\u00a0 Wellesley&#8217;s 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) committee to bring together representatives from area communities for a Food Waste summit.<\/p>\n<p>Now, as a follow-up to our October 22nd educational program, Green Needham is pleased to be a supporting co-sponsor of\u00a0 a film showing and presentation organized by the Wellesley 3R committee.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5366 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/just-eat-it-movie-image.jpg\" alt=\"just eat it movie image\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>GOOD ENOUGH TO EAT: Solutions for Reducing Food Waste<\/strong>&#8221; will be held <strong>Tuesday, <\/strong><strong>December 8th <\/strong>from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Wakelin Room of the\u00a0<strong>Wellesley Free Library.\u00a0 <\/strong>The program will explore possible options for food recycling and recovery, and will feature a screening of the food waste documentary, <em><strong>Just Eat\u00a0It<\/strong><\/em>, inspired by <strong>Wellesley High School graduate Jonathan Bloom\u2019s book<\/strong>, <em>American Wasteland<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Following the film, Wellesley native <strong>Ashley Stanley<\/strong>, founder of the Boston food rescue group\u00a0<strong>Lovin\u2019 Spoonfuls<\/strong>, will explain how her organization picks up surplus edible food from\u00a0businesses such as Whole Foods and Roche Bros. and distributes it to those in need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWasted food impacts our environment, our climate and our budget \u2013 the average family of four\u00a0could save more than $1000 every year by being less wasteful,\u201d said Ellen Korpi, chair of\u00a0Wellesley\u2019s Sustainable Energy Committee and a member of Wellesley 3R. \u201cWe use one quarter\u00a0of our water supply and four percent of our energy to grow food that is never eaten, and yet, 1 in\u00a07 Americans regularly don\u2019t have enough food to eat. The film, Jonathan Bloom\u2019s book and\u00a0Ashley Stanley\u2019s group offer insight and solutions to this issue that I hope residents will\u00a0consider.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event is open to the public.
