{"id":5501,"date":"2016-02-25T20:39:46","date_gmt":"2016-02-26T01:39:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/?p=5501"},"modified":"2021-11-19T12:50:20","modified_gmt":"2021-11-19T17:50:20","slug":"what-you-didnt-know-about-recycling-at-the-needham-rts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/2016\/02\/what-you-didnt-know-about-recycling-at-the-needham-rts\/","title":{"rendered":"What you didn\u2019t know about Recycling at the Needham RTS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Think you know everything about recycling at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.needhamma.gov\/index.aspx?NID=262\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Needham RTS<\/a>?\u00a0 Maybe, maybe not &#8211; read on, you may learn something new!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some <em>Surprising<\/em> Recycling Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sure, they&#8217;re plastic, <em><strong>but<\/strong> <\/em>&#8230;. do\u00a0<em><strong>not<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>recycle plastic bags of <em><strong>any<\/strong> <\/em>kind at the RTS &#8211; these cause <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/business\/ct-plastic-bag-ban-recycling-0731-biz-20150730-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>serious<\/strong> <\/em>problems at recycling facilities<\/a>, jamming equipment as they getting wrapped around the machinery, and contaminating bales of cardboard and paper.\u00a0\u00a0Plastic bags <em><strong>can<\/strong> <\/em>be recycled at the supermarket.<\/li>\n<li>You <em><strong>no longer<\/strong> <\/em>have to get these bulky items into a yellow trash bag, because the RTS <strong><em>now<\/em> <\/strong>takes large, rigid plastic items such as laundry baskets, trash barrels, recycling bins, lawn furniture, plastic\u00a0children&#8217;s\u00a0toys, 5 gallon pails, &amp; pet carriers &#8211; Just put them in the co-mingle bin.<\/li>\n<li>Think your clothes have no life left?\u00a0 Think again.\u00a0 Worn out, stained, or\u00a0ripped\u00a0clothing,\u00a0shoes,\u00a0&amp; domestic fabrics, that are clean\/dry and not moldy, can <em><strong>still<\/strong> <\/em>be donated.\u00a0 The unwearable material is used for making products such as industrial rags or insulation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Needham RTS\/Recycling Basics:<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/needham-RTS-YellowBags.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5524\" src=\"http:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/needham-RTS-YellowBags-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"needham RTS YellowBags\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/needham-RTS-YellowBags-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/needham-RTS-YellowBags-1024x729.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/needham-RTS-YellowBags-900x641.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Needham homeowners <strong><em>must<\/em> <\/strong>have a valid <em><strong>Needham RTS sticker<\/strong> <\/em>on their windshield to enter the RTS facility \u2013 the stickers are <strong><em>free<\/em> <\/strong>to all Needham residents, but you must have one. You can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.needhamma.gov\/index.aspx?NID=3091\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">obtain a sticker <\/a>at the Needham Town Hall.<\/li>\n<li>Needham is a\u00a0\u201cpay as you throw\u201d town, so you must dispose of all trash in a <strong><em>Needham RTS yellow trash bag<\/em><\/strong>. These are available in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.needhamma.gov\/index.aspx?NID=3091\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stores <\/a>around town, and they come in two sizes,\u00a0small (15-gallon &#8211; $1.05 each\/$10.05 package of 10) and large (30-gallon &#8211; $1.90 each\/$19.00 package of 10).<\/li>\n<li>There is <strong><em>no charge<\/em> <\/strong>for most <strong><em>recyclables<\/em><\/strong>, so the more you recycle, the more you save!\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/ma-needham2.civicplus.com\/index.aspx?NID=3104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Click here<\/a>\u00a0for the recyclables that\u00a0the RTS takes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Donate\/Recycle &#8211; remember, your trash is another Needhamite&#8217;s treasure!<\/li>\n<li>Leave\u00a0small household items and books at the <a href=\"http:\/\/ma-needham2.civicplus.com\/DocumentCenter\/View\/7628\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Goodwill trailer<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Clothing, shoes, belts, hats,\u00a0sheets,\u00a0towels,\u00a0curtains &amp; throw rugs\u00a0&#8211; in <em><strong>any condition<\/strong><\/em>,\u00a0even if stained or torn, can be left\u00a0at the <a href=\"http:\/\/ma-needham2.civicplus.com\/DocumentCenter\/View\/7628\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Goodwill trailer\u00a0<\/a> as long as they are <strong><em>clean <\/em><\/strong>and <strong><em>dry <\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span><\/em> to Recycle:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No plastic bags\/plastic wrap of any kind &#8211; but you <strong><em>can<\/em> <\/strong>compost these at home &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wholefoodsmarket.com\/blog\/home-composting-basics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">learn how<\/a>!<\/li>\n<li>No light\u00a0bulbs (and remember, CFLs contain mercury and should be left at the &#8220;Universal Waste Shed,\u00a0\u00a0next to the metal recycling area, and <em><strong>not<\/strong> <\/em>put\u00a0it in the trash).<\/li>\n<li>No drinking glasses and china &#8211; if intact, leave at\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/ma-needham2.civicplus.com\/DocumentCenter\/View\/7628\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Goodwill trailer<\/a><\/li>\n<li>No rigid Styrofoam from packaging &#8211;
