At Green Needham’s November 29th “Toward Zero Waste<\/a>” event, Greg Smith<\/strong> <\/em>(Needham’s Superintendent of Recycling and Solid Waste) presented his list of Needham’s top 10 recycling<\/strong> challenges<\/strong><\/em>:<\/p>\n

  1. Keep plastic wrap <\/em><\/strong>and plastic bags <\/em><\/strong>out of the recycling containers.\"\"<\/a><\/li>\n
  2. Keep\u00a0trash<\/strong> <\/em>out of the recycling containers.<\/li>\n
  3. Ensure that all containers put in the recycling containers are rinsed out and clean.<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n
  4. Educate residents about placing corrugated cardboard in the corrugated<\/em><\/strong> cardboard<\/strong> <\/em>recycling bin, not the mixed paper recycling containers. (Paperboard, such as boxes for cereal, pasta, toiletries, etc., does<\/strong> go into the mixed paper recycling containers.) See details<\/a> about what the RTS takes.<\/li>\n
  5. Educate residents about where to dispose of bulky rigid plastics.<\/li>\n
  6. Make residents aware of good recycling practices<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  7. Increasing<\/strong> <\/em>Needham\u2019s recycling rates.<\/li>\n
  8. Not enough staff to adequately fulfill all requirements at the RTS, given the level of service provided.<\/li>\n
  9. Keeping the organics (composting) area free<\/strong> <\/em>of non-organic<\/strong> <\/em>matter.<\/li>\n
  10. The RTS is a large facility, but has very limited space to expand services.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The biggest themes in Greg’s top 10 list are contamination reduction and community education about proper recycling practices.\u00a0 Remember, the “cleaner” our recyclables and organic material, and the higher the ratio of recyclables to trash, the better the “bottom line” is for Needham’s RTS!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
