{"id":923,"date":"2010-12-21T16:56:37","date_gmt":"2010-12-21T21:56:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/?p=923"},"modified":"2010-12-22T11:00:06","modified_gmt":"2010-12-22T16:00:06","slug":"december-green-needham-meeting-summary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/2010\/12\/december-green-needham-meeting-summary\/","title":{"rendered":"December Green Needham Meeting Summary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>December 13th&#8217;s Green Needham meeting at the Needham Public Library Community room opened with an update on several key Green Needham projects:<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b class=c>Needham 1,000<\/b> is our follow up to last year&#8217;s successful <b>10% Challenge<\/b> that saw <b>over 450 Needham households<\/b> commit to energy-saving activities that reduced greenhouse gas emissions, saved money and helped them live more sustainably.  For Needham&#8217;s tercentennial year, our goal is to <b>reach 1,000 households.<\/b> <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We&#8217;ll be working with community groups, schools, businesses and houses of worship to reach 1,000 households.<\/li>\n<li>We&#8217;re also planning a contest among several of Needham&#8217;s service organizations to see which one will get the highest percentage of their members to take the challenge.<\/li>\n<li>We&#8217;ll be working with the Town to place a plaque commemorating all the organizations who participated in one of our Town buildings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If your organization would like to be included, please get in touch with <a href=\"mailto:greenjim913@rcn.com\">Jim Glickman<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b class=c>Becoming a Green Community<\/b> &#8211; Michael Greis <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenneedham.org\/blog\/2010\/12\/a-big-step-closer-to-becoming-a-green-community\/\">summarized his meeting with the Selectmen <\/a>and our progress toward having Needham become a Massachusetts Green Community.  <\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b class=c>Eaarth Book Group<\/b> &#8211; Green Needham is putting together a book group (or several) to read and discuss <b>Bill McKibben&#8217;s<\/b> new book, <b>Eaarth<\/b>, early next year. They talked about:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How energy and climate connect to National Security<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Defining security threats posed by fossil fuel dependence<\/li>\n<li>Defining security threats posed by climate change<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li>How those threats impact our troops on the ground today<\/li>\n<li>What the US Military leadership is doing about those threats &#8211; at home and abroad<\/li>\n<li>The impact of that response on our local economy &#8211; jobs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Jon and Wade&#8217;s perspective as combat veterans gave their talk impact, immediacy and urgency.  The unfortunate results of our dependence on fossil fuels is brought home when you realize that <strong>one American soldier, sailor or airman dies for every twenty-four fuel convoys delivered to our troops<\/strong>.  And when you hear that <strong>every US military facility has an energy manager whose focus is on increasing energy efficiency and reducing energy use at the base<\/strong>, you wonder why every company, municipality and institution isn&#8217;t doing the same thing.  <\/p>\n<p>A few slides they used are included here, but we <b>encourage you to watch the rebroadcast of the meeting on The Needham Channel<\/b> to see for yourself.
