Needham hosts MCAN panel on a Carbon Tax

October 23, 2012 @ 7:00 pm - 8:45 pm

Green Needham is hosting the October Massachusetts Climate Action Network Steering Committee Meeting at the Needham Public Library. The topic of discussion at the October 23rd meeting (7:00 – 8:45 pm) will be “Tax the Bads, Not the Goods: Is a Carbon Tax in our future?” Could such an approach work in Massachusetts? Could a grassroots ballot initiative build enough statewide support to make it a reality?

The panel includes:

  • Gary Rucinski, founder of the Boston Chapter of Citizens Climate Lobby
  • Marc Breslow, co-founder and former Executive Director of MCAN, who was instrumental in the design of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative which set a price on carbon for northeast power plants
  • Rob Garrity, Executive Director of MCAN

Panel members will endeavor to explore these questions with MCAN chapter leaders to see if such a legislative approach would make sense to promote a more sustainable future for Massachusetts.

The Massachusetts Climate Action Network is a coalition of over 40 community-based organizations in Massachusetts working on climate and sustainability issues (Green Needham is an MCAN member). MCAN holds is regular steering committee meetings in member communities around the region to encourage participation and allow chapter members from different communities to meet and to share ideas and experiences. All are invited to participate.
