Green Needham was founded in 2006, making 2026 our 20th anniversary!

We plan to commemorate this milestone by looking back at what Green Needham and the Town have accomplished together, and looking forward to next steps we can take to promote sustainability and combat climate change. Each month in 2026 we will publish a blog post on a topic related to our work. Topics might include waste reduction, clean energy, green transportation, and net zero buildings. We’ll discuss past accomplishments and future challenges and opportunities.

Looking back over the past 20 years, what stands out to us is the Town of Needham’s deepening commitment to a sustainable future. In the last five years alone, the Town has declared a climate emergency, committed to being carbon neutral by 2050, created a Climate Action Roadmap to guide us toward our carbon-neutral future, entered an electricity aggregation agreement, adopted the Specialized Energy Code to make new building construction more sustainable, banned a number of harmful plastic products, and hired our first Sustainability Manager. Wow!

Green Needham spearheaded many of these initiatives and we have been thrilled to see them come to fruition. We are deeply grateful to our partners in this work – Town staff (special shout-out to Gabby Queenan, Needham’s Sustainability Manager), the League of Women Voters of Needham, local houses of worship, and YOU! Thank you for your interest and support, and for the small and large ways you help propel us toward a sustainable future. We look forward to working together for the next twenty years and more!
