Heat Smart Alliance (HSA) is a private, non-profit organization that encourages the installation of heat pump systems to reduce residential carbon emissions. HSA offers free training to individuals who would like to provide “energy coaching” services to homeowners in their towns. An energy coach meets with homeowners to explain how heat pumps work and how they can take the place of, or supplement, their existing heating systems.
You do not have to be an engineer to do this work. In fact, communication skills and the ability to convey technical information in layman’s terms are actually more valuable. HSA will provide you with the requisite technical training needed. Initially, you will work with Green Needham’s current energy coach to familiarize yourself with the nature of the work. Once you are comfortable, you can do this work independently. The Green Needham energy coaching work has typically involved 2-4 house calls per month. Each house call is typically 1-2 hours, plus limited prep and follow-up time. Your time commitment is flexible.
