The Newton Needham Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Environment Committee is planning its Spring Business Breakfast on May 4 at the Needham Sheraton and is seeking nominations for the annual Green Business Awards.

To qualify, a business must be based in either Newton, Needham or a neighboring community and either

  1. has made significant progress in reducing energy, or implemented other environmental strategies toward sustainability, or
  2. supplies innovative green products or services

In evaluating businesses, judges may consider the following factors: waste prevention, recycling, purchasing, energy and water conservation, involving stakeholders (such as employees, clients and/or suppliers), transportation and social capital.

Top honors in 2016 went to Needham’s TripAdvisor in recognition of the construction of its environmentally-friendly 282,000-square foot world headquarters in the N2 Innovation District and to

Powerhouse Dynamics, a Newton-based company which helps businesses reduce energy costs food waste through a proprietary monitoring system.

Also recognized were Johnny’s Luncheonette in Newton, Needham Bank, Mark’s Northeastern Furniture Foundation of Needham and two houses of worship, the Eliot Church of Newton and the First Unitarian Society in Newton.

“The Green Business Breakfast is a chance to bring together local businesses, energy and environmental experts and policy makers to discuss the challenges and opportunities related to preserving and protecting our environment,” said Greg Reibman, president of the Newton-Needham Chamber.

“We hope the recognition these outstanding businesses and each year inspires others to also embrace best practices and a commitment to reduce our carbon footprint.
