Turn down the heat a few degrees; turn air conditioning down or off for a time; use the dishwasher later in the evening — small actions taken by a large number of people can make a big impact on the electric grid at times of peak power demand.

Mass Energy  recently rolled out a new program, “Shave the Peak,” which alerts participants when it’s time to take collective action to lower power demand. I’ve signed up. How about you?

Shave the Peak empowers residential energy consumers to reduce energy demand on the most important days of the year. On peak days—usually the hottest or coldest days of the year—electricity demand soars, and the high electric demand is met by the most expensive, dirty fuels. Shave the Peak helps New Englanders take collective action to make an impact on our electric grid.  With Shave the Peak, you can receive text alerts on peak days, learn more about demand and the electrical grid, and support our advocacy efforts to clean up the New England power system.

Read more about the program and about “Peak electric demand.”  Sign up to receive an “electricity peak alert” text or email from Mass Energy, with information about how you can easily reduce your electrical use and help to “shave the peak.”
