What are we trying to accomplish?
Given that the damaging effects of climate change are already being experienced in Massachusetts, we are asking the community to make new efforts to cut energy use, adopt renewable energy, and reduce waste and toxic chemicals. No one entity can do everything, but we are offering our help to identify existing solutions that offer environmental (and often financial) benefits. At the same time we want to celebrate success and share solutions, thus adding to Needham’s civic pride and support of local businesses, organizations, and institutions.
Who will participate in the GO GREEN Needham Campaign?
Local businesses, houses of worship, clubs and organizations, schools, individual residents, elected and appointed officials as well as the Town itself will be asked to participate.
- Community Organizations
- Houses of Worship
- Town and Schools
- My GO GREEN Needham pledge -for individuals and households
What does it mean to participate?
We will help participants to take a fresh look at their current practices and operations and to identify concrete steps they can take toward sustainability. Participants would make a commitment to adopt one or more new practices in the next six months, bring to fruition something in the planning stages, and/or develop a plan and commit to a completion date for more complex new practices.
What are some examples? A business could improve recycling or take advantage of Eversource’s energy efficiency program. A club could implement ways to reduce waste at its events. A restaurant could begin composting its kitchen food waste. There are many creative possibilities.
What are we offering?
We will meet with you, offer suggestions, get your ideas, and give you contacts to help you pursue options. We will publicize the GO GREEN Needham Campaign, using our website and active Social Media to spotlight participants, writing blog posts and newsletter articles that feature accomplishments of participants, and we will give special recognition/awards in various categories. If desired, we will furnish “GO GREEN Needham Participant” signs or stickers for display.
A major Campaign event will be the GO GREEN Needham Expo at Powers Hall on November 10, 2018. This event will offer fun family activities as we celebrate Needham’s GO GREEN accomplishments to date, feature businesses offering environmental services, and have informative displays and presentations about climate change and other environmental issues.
