Investing in energy was one of the focus areas of the Federal Stimulus Package passed early this year.  Much of that is actually being distributed through existing programs.  While this takes longer,  it provides greater accountability and costs less than creating new programs.

One such existing program funded by the stimulus was the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program.   Needham applied for funding under one of the categories for which it qualified – improving the thermal efficiency of oil-fired buildings.  The awards were recently announced, and Needham was one of about 90 Massachusetts communities receiving funding.  Needham’s $86,345 award will be used for a new energy management system at the Hillside School.
