Excitement is growing for a Needham farmers market. If all goes according to plans prepared by an inspired and energetic group of Needham volunteers, the new market will open in July 2012. The most likely location is the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital parking lot on Chestnut Street, a central location that will enable many Needham folks to get there on foot or bicycle.

Everyone knows that farmers markets offer fresh local food, but the planning group envisions much more. The market can provide opportunities for nutrition and health education, information booths for non-profits, community service hours for high school students, a venue for local bands to strut their stuff, and an informal meeting place for the entire Needham community on Sunday afternoons. What a great boost to the quality of life in our town!

The newly formed board of directors of the market are working hard, but start-up funds are needed now. Interested folks are asked to become “Seedlings” by donating $20 or more to the effort. Their support will be rewarded with a Needham Farmers Market decal and a big “Thank you!” Volunteers to help with planning, promotion, and coordination are also needed.
