Refrigerators are a prime example of the benefits of increasing energy efficiency standards.  In the early 1970’s, refrigerators were among the most costly appliances to own and run.  Manufacturers made no effort to improve energy efficiency because they were concerned about the cost and risk involved and a perceived lack of consumer interest.  Beginning that year, appliance manufacturers and the government worked together to create higher standards that have steadily increased over time.

The mandated standards created a level playing field and spawned a wave of innovation that continues today.  Compared to a refrigerators purchased in 1975, today’s refrigerators are larger, have more features (ice makers, through the door water dispensers, touch screens, etc.), cost less and use 75% less energy.
