Fight Climate Change with Diet Change

Green Needham Collaborative has partnered with the League of Women Voters of Needham and the Needham Community Farm to launch an initiative to encourage healthy and environmentally friendly eating habits, based on the internationally recognized Meatless Monday model.

Meatless Monday Needham aims to inspire people to decrease consumption of meat and eat more healthy plant-based meals. This goal will be accomplished by encouraging people to take a pledge:

“I pledge to eat healthy plant-based meals every Monday for the next 12 weeks.”

The pledge is meant to be easy and enjoyable, with Meatless Monday Needham providing delicious meatless recipes, educational events, and opportunities for pledgers to share their experiences.

The Meatless Monday Needham website provides information and research indicating the benefits of decreasing consumption of meat and eating more plant-based meals. These benefits include lower risk for type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers.

Because of the high carbon footprint of meat, especially red meat, reducing meat consumption is also an effective way to decrease production of greenhouse gases that drive climate change.

So increasing plant-based foods and limiting your intake of meat, especially red meat, is a triple win — good for you, good for the environment,  and an inspiration to expand your cooking repertoire. We hope you will join with us in taking the pledge.

A Word About the Global Meatless Monday Movement: Meatless Monday was founded in 2003 by Sid Lerner in association with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Center for a Livable Future. and is now active in over 40 countries and in many cities in the U.S. from Pittsburgh to Los Angeles.
